High ACT, low SAT, how are my chances affected?

I am junior in high school and I have taken both the SAT and ACT. I took the SAT sophomore year and got a 1700. I took the ACT recently and got a 33. When applying to Stanford, will admissions only consider my ACT score? I plan on retaking the ACT (I prepped this time and consistently score 35s composite, so I think I can improve on my 33). I understand nobody has a “good” chance at Stanford, but will my embarrassingly low SAT affect my chances any? Don’t ask how I did so bad on the SAT, I guess the ACT is better for me. It was not even a bad day for me on the SAT, when I took the PSAT last October I received a 183, which is better but not Stanford level. Thanks everybody!

Er… they require you to send the score, and the discrepancy is large enough that it would probably raise some eyebrows. It’s not too uncommon to have a difference in the scores, but in this case the difference is rather large. I don’t think it will hurt your chances too much, but it will probably make the officers think twice. Since you already took it once (in retrospect, you probably should have taken some practice tests beforehand to make sure your score wasn’t like this), it might be a good idea to try to bring it up to at least 2000…

I encourage taking the SAT again just to show a higher score but focus on the ACT because your scores are more solid on it. Stanford is ridiculously difficult to be accepted to. They reject hundreds of perfect scorers each cycle. More than test scores, your grades, courses, essays and activities will decide it.
