I looked at the Fall 2005 calendar yesterday and noticed that there's school on Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). There's no school on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), but that's because this year it falls during the Fall break. Are there students and teachers who go to religious services on these days rather than to classes? Are any accommodations made if a paper or a quiz or a lab is scheduled on one of those days?

I am pretty sure talking to the professor in the class would result in accomodations made. There should be no reason Swat would not do that.

Here is an article I found searching Swat's website. It was the issue after 9/11/2001 in the Phoenix. Sorry, it had to be this article, still brings shivers down my spine...

Here is an excerpt from it:
"As Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approached, Rachel Kobrin, Jewish adviser, was coordinating carpooling efforts to local synagogues during the High Holy Days for students unable to return home because of travel limitations following the crisis. Wishing everyone a sweet New Year," Kobrin joined others on campus providing spiritual support."

Here is a page with Rachel Kobrin's contact telephone number. I am sure she wouldn't object to it being posted, since it is a Swarthmore College telephone number:

It is kinda way down the page..under "SMART" or just search for Rachel Kobrin. You could call her and get more details..

Thank you; I appreciate your searching for the answer to my question. And I'm sorry you had to be reminded of that horror in the process.

It certainly looks like, one way or another, they expect that some students will be attending services. I have made a note of Ms. Kobrin's phone number. My mind is at ease!

Hi Searching,
My child is a sophomore at Swarthmore and active within Ruach, the student run Hillel type group. The advisor to the Jewish student group pretty much changes yearly, so I believe that the name and telephone number you were previously directed to is now outdated. Here is a link to current students and their particular area of "expertise." I'm sure that any of them would be happy to respond to your specific questions. http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/org/ruach/ruacontactlist.html

Wow, momof3sons; what a great list! Thank you. My daughter can't decide whom to email first. On our last visit to Swarthmore, she was waiting in front of a professor's door where, coincidentally, a few girls were standing who had been to the Ruach services the previous Friday night. They loved it! That's one of the groups my daughter is very interested in getting involved in.
