how easy is it to go home for holidays?

I want to go home for yom kippur but the school only gives us thursday off. If I go home I'll miss class on friday. Am I excused from missing class on friday?

Same issue for Rosh Hashanah this year....Classes only cancelled on Tuesday....I imagine ALOT of kids will be attending services at Hillel....unless they know an upper classman who wants to drive home for 24 hours....highly unlikely....
guess you can fly home for 24 hours if it's important for you to be home....

No not really. There's a lot of controversy here. A lot of kids just skip class. Talk to your professors, it may be ok. Or just do it and don't explain. It's college, and missing class is your choice.
On the other hand, as part of Jewish life on campus, I have to tell you what a good experience it can be to celebrate at SU. You may meet people. Something called Fresh Fest from Hillel helps Jewish students get together.
It makes me a little (ok more than a little) sad to celebrate without my family and traditions, but it's a new experience and you might find something you like.

threekids: without exact numbers, how many people do you estimate stay on campus for the high holidays and how many go home? There is no way that my D will be coming home for Rosh Hashanah, but she may be able to for Yom kippur....(Thursday off, no Friday classes)...also, are there other freshman get-togethers at Hillel other than Freshfest (which is actually going on right now...)

Hillel has told me they get close to 1000 for the high holidays (grad students are included).
Actually, if you miss fresh fest, your best bet is being really friendly on a Friday night at Hillel.
To be honest, (eep, don't wanna scare anyone off) I missed fresh fest and was more than a little shy and didn't really feel like I fit in at Hillel. I found Jewish life at Chabad, made a few Jewish friends. Now they are leading Hillel, and I'm a bit tired of Chabad, so I think I'll give Hillel another shot.
