High Point University NC - others like it?

Rightfit:
We have also visited High Point University and it is one of my son's top choices, if not number one. We like the "whole person" approach as well and are very impressed with what Nido Qubein has done at HPU over the last several years. We visited Elon University too but he did not apply there even though he liked it well enough. Son was accepted early admission to High Point and is waiting on regular decision letters from several schools before making his decision. Applications are up tremendously at HPU and I agree that the calibre of student will continue to improve over the years to come.

Just jumping in here..totally off "sides" of the OP's question, but since some of you seem to know a good deal about UNC-CH..how hard is it REALLY to get in there being an in-state person with a 1700 SAT, a 3.8 GPA, with A's and B's and some AP classes and mostly to all honors classes?

Is it true that UNC-C is on par with UNC-G? The reason I ask is that my DD didn't like UNC-G at all and we have a visit at UNC-C today..UNC-A is a bit further away, tougher to go visit, but we are planning on it?

Also..as far as UNC-G goes, my daughter, like I said above, was not impressed.

High Point looks like a nice school, as does Queens

UNC-G doesn't hold a candle to UNC-CH - completely different type of UNC school - since they admit 82% in-state - chances are just as good as any other in-state applicant with decent stats

Hey JeepMOM, just got back today from our visit to ECU. S2 liked it a lot..bought a t-shirt plus license plate and decal for his truck. It's definitely a go...sending in the housing form tomorrow.

Housing on the HILL or???

High Point University- although the stats may not be as high as some other schools, stats can be misleading. We all want our kids to be challenged in college, to associate with people who want to succeed and who work hard. In addition, I want my children to be able to get meaningful work after college so I can retire. In DC area, many of our children attend very expensive private schools. Some of those schools are pressure cookers; others teach to the whole student. Unfortunately, I know many students who have “succeeded” in terms of test scores and grades, only to have nervous breakdowns, eating disorders, depression in college. Give me a happy kid who works hard any day of the week. And looking back over my managerial career, the employees I ended up firing all attended Ivy League colleges and law schools. Go figure. I think HPU may be the prefect school for many students. And I would bet that they all get great jobs upon graduation.

Uh amazon mom? This is a two year old thread. Just saying…

but yes, what you say is accurate. I too have seen some of these kids from private schools (and sometimes the top 5-10 students in competitive public schools) who are type A perfectionists have TOTAL MELTDOWNS in college…can’t adjust, can’t accept criticism, can’t get along with people in dorms, can’t do much except complain, whine and exert negativity…then withdraw, and go into a dark place, sometimes with very disastrous results. Mental health issues are surprisingly and sadly VERY common in college. Parents drop off their kids and have no idea how hard it is to adjust to dorm life, college stresses, and being homesick…even for the normal kids. It is VERY important to stay connected with your kids and help them. Dorm life is NOT easy. Lack of sleep, poor eating habits, really irritating people making a lot of noise and otherwise misbehaving…in your face 24/7.

HPU does a decent job of making it easier.
