High Sats Low GPA Chance?

You guys are all well familiar with UMichigans admission process by now. Could you offer me any advice and my chances? Thanks!

Washington DC
Private School
Male
Applying as Freshman
3.0 GPA
2250 SAT (780cr, 760math, 710writing)
34 ACT
4 on AP Spanish 4 on AP Lang Comp 5 on APUSH
All Honors + 7 AP Classes (AP Spanish, AP Lang Comp, AP Lit, APUSH, AP US GOV, AP Bio, AP BC Calc)

Standard EC's nothing amazing.
Assuming good letters of recommendation and good essay.

3.0? expect a rejection letter…

Forgot to mention that my school does not rank. Thanks!

is your high school really famous?

pretty slim…Alot of people got denied with low gpa/high test scores this year

I’ve seen a 3.5 gpa with those SAT’s get in, but if you look at their recent stats, their average gpa is something like 3.9. If (1) you have a good explanation why the low scores (illness, family issues, extremely demanding high school, etc.) and (2) it’s in the high end (at least upper half) of the gpa’s for your high school and (3) your grades have been rising throughout high school, then it could happen.

You have taken a demanding course load, which is uber important, and this could explain your less-than-stellar gpa. You just have to worry that with your gpa and your good test scores, they may feel that you didn’t try very hard in high school (since you obviously have the talent).

However, if you DON’T apply at all, then you for SURE won’t get in, so go ahead and apply and give it your best. You just never know what will grab the attention of an admissions officer. Just be prepared to counter the perception that you weren’t giving a lot of effort (for instance… did you also work at an outside job??) Good luck.

possibly if its a really well regarded ivy prep school and you have good reasons for getting slightly lower grades

I don’t think it even qualifies as a reach. Michigan has a GPA focused admissions. You should look for schools that place more emphasis on test scores.

Thanks for the help! Could you possibly recommend some test heavy schools?

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is NYU. Though if you want to go there, make sure you can afford it because they are cheap.

If you want your test scores to overcompensate, I’d definitely do subject testing. Also, rock out your classes the first half of the senior year, we’re talking like straight As. You also want to build up your ECs more and write killer essays and letters of rec. U of M also definitely takes other circumstances like family problems into consideration (diversity). It’s DEFINITELY possible for you to squeak out an acceptance letter, but you’re going to have to bust your ass.

My son applied last year with 3.8 gpa, 33ACT, very solid ecs (including Eagle Scout) and got flat out rejected.

I’m not familiar with UM, but those things sometimes happens and no one could explain why. Someone in my area had a 2310 and 3.8 GPA and was rejected to most UCs

applied EA last year to michigan with a 3.2 GPA and a 2310 superscore SAT. i got in. ironically, i was waitlisted by NYU. i went to a public high school in NJ and i really had no excuse for my grades, except that i was an underachiever.

I got in with a 3.2 gpa and a 1510/1600…my school doesn’t rank…it’s doable

^Damn these two posts make me feel a lot better since I have a ~3.35 UW and 1540/1600. Did you guys have some kind of a hook or were your ECs/essays amazing?
