I just ended my first semester of junior year and I did relatively bad compared to my freshman and sophomore years I was dealing with depression and I just let my grades slip so even though I got them up higher at the end it was too late.
Here is what I have (my school doesn’t do plus or minus on grades but just for reference)
AP Physics- B (80%)
High Honors Pre Calc- B (89%)
Honors Spanish 4- B (most likely, could be an A)
AP US History- B (88%)
AP Lang and Comp- A (97% in this class, why can’t I just transfer over to the other classes :()
Journalism- A
Leaders PE- A
ACT SCORE (1st time I took it, no prep)- 33
Do I still have hope for colleges such as NYU/ BU? I have a lot of extra curriculars too but I’m just so worried about these grades.
Those are still really good grades. If that’s what you got without studying on your ACTs, then you have a great chance for BU (I simply don’t know enough about NYU to comment on that but you can check their common data set.) Good luck!
Thank you for your advice @lottechar .Do you think that I should talk to my counselor just so he knows about the rough period I went through 1st semester?
Is this your way of saying that you are no longer experiencing symptoms of depression? Real depression is a very serious issue and isn’t something that should be taken lightly. Were you diagnosed professionally/did you seek medical attention? If so, I don’t think you need to bring depression up with your counselor, so long as you’re not still struggling, inflicting self harm, or anything that could put you or your future at risk. If you were not diagnosed, the counselor may have to take steps to ensure your safety, and since you say that you’re over your depression, I don’t know if you really want to go through this. This could be good for you though, depending on your situation. I don’t know anything about it, and I don’t need to know.
Regardless of what you decide to do, you can write about your experience with depression in your college essay and how it’s helped you to grow and become the person you are today. So long as you don’t play the victim card, you’re set.
(As a side note, those grades are just fine and NOTHING to scoff at. So what if they’re not straight As? There are tons of students at both NYU and BU that aren’t straight A students. You should still try to put full effort into your work, but getting a B or two is nothing to be upset over. You have a bright future ahead of you.)
I got the exact same GPA as you!!! Still bummed out though, we have two more semesters left to retrieve ourselves before applying to our dreams schools (hopefully I get into UCLA). But, I came to a conclusion that one semester of horrible grades will NOT lead to horrible overall GPA. We just need to focus on our SAT and our semester two grades!
Btw, so jealous of your ACT, and you took it quite early! One less thing to worry about!
Use your judgement, if you think it’s something to talk to your GC about then go ahead and do it. But if you do I think it should be because you want him to be concerned about you as a person, not as grades.
