High School Absences and College Admission (HELP!)

I’ve read that absences on your high school transcript can possibly raise red flags to colleges. What might you consider an excessive amount of absences?

I’m currently a valedictorian and plan on applying to top schools such as Duke, Harvard, Stanford, and Vanderbilt, but I must admit that I didn’t mind taking days off from school when I felt too tired or a little sick, since it obviously did not affect my performance. Absences just don’t seem to matter too much at my school, as long as you have below 9 each semester in order to exempt exams. Additionally, many of my teachers did not even bother to take attendance, which makes it look as if I skipped….

Big mistake?

It sounds like you have below 9 each semester, so you should be fine.

yeah 7 or 8 in some classes, but 3 in others. ha

I tried to google my question, and some yahoo answers Q & A came up saying she couldn't apply to certain colleges because she had 17 absences in a year (I have 15 in some classes)...

I think CC will be a more reliable source?

what the hell. since when do absences go on the transcript?

my school includes absences, others don't (but some also have tardies). I just received my transcript, hence I am slightly frieked out.

helppp?

It seems to me that if a college cares a lot about absenses in HS that college might not be a good fit for you and a school that ignores attendence and focuses on your adcademic performance might be a good fit ... in other words the schools may self-select themselves and point you at schools that match your work style.

Oh I will definitely attend college classes. I've done dual enrollment / staying in dorms, and it is really not a problem. I am applying to schools where I will be challenged and believe that the professor will be able to offer significant insight.

Are Harvard, Stanford, Duke, Vandy such schools that " ignore attendence and focus on your adcademic performance"? I guess that is my real question.

bumpppppp.

Why don't you email the schools?

a related question: what if i don't have many absences, but i have a lot of lates?
