Hello, I am currently a Junior in High School and I am not sure if my application for college will be competitive enough because everyone around me seems to always be ahead of me. I can really use some advice and suggestions about the courses and extracurriculars I have taken. These are the AP courses I have taken and plan to take my Senior year:
Sophomore Year: AP Spanish Language & Culture (4), English 10 Honors
Junior Year: (haven’t taken the AP exams yet)
AP Biology, AP Art History, AP English Language and Composition, Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors
Senior Year: AP Calculus AB , AP English Literature and Composition, AP Psychology,
AP Spanish Literature and Composition
For my extracurriculars activities:
Volunteered at a hospital for 3 years, public library for 3 years, Soup Kitchen 3 years, Tutored for Spanish at my high school for 3 years, helped elementary school kids with homework and read to them for 4 years, pet shelter 3 years, assisted my elderly neighbor for 3 years as well. The majority have been only 3 years because I currently moved to another city and attended high school and lived here for 3 years here.
Extra things I have participated:
Spanish Spelling Bee, Softball Coach for my little league team, Softball Captain in my travel team, and I have been in clubs and has a position in 2 clubs, Secretary and Vice President.
I know it’s a lot but this is what I’m going to show for my college application and I can really use some adivce on what else I can do to strengthen my application, or if it’s good enough to get me into UCLA, USC, or UC Davis. Practically any UC School. Thank you!!
UC’s are very GPA focused so having a competitive GPA is a large part of your application. Competitive test scores will also definitely help. If you check the CDS for the UC’s, GPA/Test Scores/HS course Rigor and essays are considered the most important in their application review. EC’s are important and they do help differentiate you from the thousands applicants so you want to stand out and to do this, focus on a few EC’s that are important to you and that interest you most.
Thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate it!
keep in mind, if you don’t have competitive GPA, SAT/ACT, the rest is noise. A killer EC list won’t get a 3.5/1100 into UCLA - or Davis for that matter. Focus on those elements first - then do an activity or two that you like.
Also, a word of caution about your planned Sr schedule - Honors Trig to AP Calc is a huge jump and will probably be tough to manage - especially with 3 other AP classes, college aps, Sr Ball, etc. 2-3 AP classes will probably show plenty of course rigor, allow you to keep your grades up and stay sane. Depending what you want to study in college, Id encourage you take regular psych, perhaps AP Stat instead of Calc .
Aright thank you. But for my high school people go directly to AP Calc AB right after honors algebra2/trig. And my GPA right now is a 4.5 which I’m hoping to raise by getting straight A’s next year as well. For the Spanish Spelling Bee, do you think that will make me stand out??
