High school activities

I am really new to admission process in US. I need some advice.

My son is is a Junior. He is an active member of year round Physics club last year. But has also done research internship in Chemistry at the university.

Does he need to focus on one or the other? Does it sound like a bad idea because the student's interests are so wide and not focussed. He is hoping to get into Ivy Leagues. But he is not sure whether he has to give up either chemistry or physics.

I appreciate any comments. Thanks.

No, no, no! This is a gross misinterpretation of the “focus your ECs” philosophy, which is meant to discourage the overburdened high schooler from joining every club from Science Olympiad to debate to NHS and three varsity sports.

Your son has done exactly the right thing in pursuing his honest interests rather than those that he thinks will impress adcoms (as that often backfires). Be proud of his accomplishments, and encourage him to continue zealously pursuing his interest in science.
