High School Athletic scholarships - Myth or Reality?

Do private high schools offer financial aid on the basis of athletics? from all the official documentation, it looks like scholarships are need base only…

Schools seem to be able to conjure up money when they want a student. Athlete or not.

Some will, some won’t.

Private high schools typically offer scholarships based on need and academic merit, not athletics. They don’t make big money on athletics like colleges do.

^^ oh, I wouldn’t say that! They have alums who want to win, and who give money when they win. There are certainly high schools that recruit, and they make it work for some students who happen to be athletes and who happen to need money to go to those schools. It will not be called an athletic scholarship.

My kids went to a catholic high school that had a $40M athletic facility (a $10M swimming pool). It was run independently of the school (by the athletic director). There were 3-4 baseball fields and several soccer fields, and they were rented out every night and weekend. Several private clubs practiced at the pool. It was definitely a money maker. There were fees to participate on the high school teams, and there certainly were scholarships for those fees for those who couldn’t afford them.
