…And the one time I played kickball (during dryland for swimming), a 16 year old kicked the ball right into my face. No thank you.

Nice scores there. I’m trying to convince my parents to let me take the ACTs, but they are set on forbidding it until I take Algebra 2, which is funny as I have already self studied it during the night when I’m supposed to be sleeping. I’d rather wait than get in trouble for not getting eight hours of sleep though (I have a big party I’m going to in two weeks, and getting grounded would end my chances of going:() Also, just putting this out there, have any of you attended CTY summer intensive? If you haven’t, you should, although it does cost an arm and a leg.

iluvbooks94: You make CC sound uglier than it really is. CC will definitely not interfere with the things I like to do the most (reading, blogging, playing sports, etc.) and it is definitely not stressing me out in any way. I’m glad that I can make wise choices for my future and avoid some of the worst mistakes people make in high school that affect their future (such as blowing off freshman year thinking it doesn’t really matter). It doesn’t mean I’m not going to take class A because class B looks better on a college application - If I’m more interested in class A, I will take class A regardless of how it will look on a college application. As for enjoying high school, I think that’s going to be made a little difficult due to being at the bottom of the food chain as a freshman. It’s surprising how fast things can change - One year you’re in the 8th grade at the very top of the chain and the next year you’re all the way at the bottom again. I’ll see how it goes freshman year though. :)

Niquii77: I’m actually 14, LOL. Honestly though, it’s not like I’m already prepping my college application essays or anything. I just want to know what other students are doing freshman year. The automatic assumption that we’re trying to map out the rest of our life is ridiculous.

sg12909: I have NO IDEA what is considered a good score on the ACT - I don’t even know the grading scale. I’m going to assume that it’s a really good score though. As for taking the ACT, I don’t plan on taking it until whatever year people normally take it in. :)

Jabberwocky7: My parents don’t really have a lot of money. My dad quit his job because he had his heart set on buying a restaurant but the restaurant owner cancelled the deal at the last minute so my dad had to find another job which pays considerably less. My attendance would depend on how much it costs.

Just wait until you have to write a essay you don’t want to or do math problems that can always wait…then CC will do it’s job of keeping you “busy” (AKA you procrastinating) ;)

I used to think I was smart until a 13 year old got a 36…dang.

CE527M: I’m already a habitual procrastinator but as of now, CC hasn’t interfered with the things I have to do. If you must know though, I had no homework today so CC is not off limits. ;)

I think it would be fun to be in Pre-IB which leads up to IB since it has kids who wants the academic challenge. They aren’t forced to like my US History class whom won’t grow mature and allow my teacher to do his work. I haven’t really learned anything besides the Revolution War since my teacher is kind of a push over. Everyone else in the Freshman year has a chance of doing AP Human Geography while the people who are in Pre-IB is doing AP European History which will be kind of fun learning about the Renaissance all over again. My history fair topic was based on the Printing Press and I got 1st place with it. I can’t wait to see the same group over and over during the IB times and you’ll get the first-hand experience of procrastination and how it will affect your academic life.

I’ve always wanted to attend a CTY summer program but I can’t afford to skip 3 weeks of swim practice. @jabberwocky you choose to stay up studying ACT’s?!? The only time I did that was the night before the test itself (I <3 procrastination). That, my friend, is overachieving.

:):) My parents call me the drill sergeant. I thought the same about CTY in the beginning because I was training for Nationals, but it turned out they had an indoor track. So, I pretty much ran in a hot sweaty gymnasium with creepy sixteen year old boys hollering after me. On top of that I was forced to limit my piano practicing to one hour a day on a stinky old upright. Really though, it was A LOT of fun. The culture there was so fun and unique - we watched stupid movies (like Starcrash, this horrible knockoff of star wars), had a pokemon dance (alas, I was sick for this one), and ate potatoes every single day for every single meal (baked potatoes, hash browns, potato stuffing, potato soup, french fries, french fries, and did I mention the french fries?). I think I gained fifteen pounds off of those potatoes, but they were like McDonalds - so disgusting you loved them.

I’ll be graduating in 2017, and I’m sooo excited to start highschool! Selecting courses is a bit confusing though
I’m taking AP biology next year (without taking biology), which a few people on here told me not to do, but I really like science and my teacher said she believes I can handle it, so yeah!

They let you do that at your school? Sooooo lucky. At my school its a lock step system: you must take the prerequisite to take the next course. No exceptions. I would easily trade lives to take AP Biology so early … it’s my favorite science (I’m an aspiring young surgeon. Biology sort of comes in handy in that field:P)

Jabberwocky7: I just got a response about which grade level we can take AP classes. The dean said that most AP classes aren’t taken until junior or senior year. She didn’t specifically say we weren’t allowed to take them in freshman or sophomore year though. I’m going to ask my guidance counselor if I can get some sort of recommendation to take some in freshman or sophomore year. I’m hoping for the best.

Also, I’m just filling out a CTY Talent Search application. I’m sending mine in with the financial aid form so I only have to pay $10 and I’ll be getting a fee waiver for whichever standardized test they pick (or do I get to pick??).

What has been your experience with CTYOnline or any of the summer programs? Just curious.

I have personally done only CTY summer, which was a blast, although it didn’t count for credit (but it does allow me to skip some prerequisites because of a hole in my school systems myriad of regulations). Lots of friends have done CTYOnline, and my younger sisters are doing it too, albeit at an elementary level. The literature courses are apparently some of the best, but I’ve heard there are some better online schools for math. Personally, I go to a huge school system and I have to take the system’s online courses, which are mediocre at best. Also, I would suggest that you take the SAT for the first time, just because it is definitely the more common test at CTY.

Good luck with your guidance counselor! I could easily go on a tirade about the stupid rules that inhibit students, like limiting APs in younger grades, but I’ll spare you :)

PS: I may be biased, but if you decide to apply for CTY Summer, go to Dickinson College in Carlisle PA. It was the BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!

You ate french fries all day while in training for nationals? lol.
I actually didn’t know that they would let me swim… did you specifically ask the admin? It’s hard to push myself to the limit without a coach yelling at me though.
And I could never be a surgeon… both parents are in the medical field, and I can’t stomach the thought of surgery

@Swinter wow this thread exists

There probably aren’t more than five or so of us 17ers :p

I think we should compile a list. . .

Forgot tomatox1. Sorry Derek

^feels so embarrassing to be called out by name… sigh

I will def. be studying AP exams over the summer.

@Jabberwocky your planned schedule is crazy. You’re trying to take 6 AP classes in one year, and each AP class has like 1 hour of homework a day. I suggest that you pile 3 or so self-study exams into Freshman Year.

Sorry
I agree, 6 AP’s in in freshman year is crazy. I’ll probably be taking only two or three next year- AP Chinese, AP Chemistry (or possibly AP Physics), and maybe AP statistics
