High School Class of 2017

@Spiral7‌ So you will just take a lower grade?

@dsi411‌ For this assignment, maybe, for the next I will protest. I did almost all the work for this assignment, which I actually don’t mind that much, because I’m gaining a stronger understanding of the material, BUT when I have 3 other projects, 4 tests and an essay, I will be disadvantaged in my other classes for spending 2x the amount of time on Chinese. I know I can get an A, probably an A+ in this class because of the HW, quizzes and tests, which I always get 100+ on.

She isn’t putting my grade in jeopardy, just my time and sanity

I see.

@dsi411‌ I’m not trying to be rude, even the teacher rolls her eyes when the girl answers things.

On another note: one girl in my PRE-AP English 10 class asked: ‘which one is the semi-colon?’ today… sigh…

LOLing so hard @ that, @Spiral7 . Anyways, this school year has forced me to be a lot more involved compared to last year. I’m regularly attending after/before school events, whether they’re Book/Spanish/Film/Beta Club meetings or I’m staying after to take pictures of games for Newspaper.

I dislike my history class, though it’s incredibly easy up until the point in which he (the teacher) subjects a horrendously worded test that asks things that we’ve never even gone over or touched on once on us. The things he actually does teach never appear on the tests. I can see this if I were taking APUSH, but this is an integrated half honors half regular American history 1 class and we all take the same test. ??? Retakes are a must but this class is just taught poorly and I’m sad about that because I actually find American history intriguing.

Newspaper is really fun though sometimes stressful. I get to go off campus all the time for ad sales, which, as an underclassman, is pretty cool. We also stop at Chick fil a or other fast food places frequently so I’m happy. I really like the process so far of coming together to create a publication and our school has one of the best newspapers in the state, so it’s really awesome to be part of this. My teacher is fabulous also.

Math is sort of icky… My teacher is a harsh woman who sometimes loses track of what we’re doing in class. Spanish 3 Honors is last and taught entirely in Spanish, which I should have seen coming, but it still shocked me. The participation scores are what really kill me too. We’re expected to participate at least 2 times each day, which would be fine…if she actually picked me when I raise my hand.

Not sure anyone cares, but I feel like I haven’t posted a “what I think about the school year” post yet, though I might be mistaken.

I really hope my math teacher gives partial credit on the math test we took yesterday; there was a problem that involved the volume of a cone (although I have no idea what it had to do with the problem we were on) and I got the formula for the volume of a cone wrong (I accidentally cubed the radius), so I got the question wrong. However, I know I got the gist of the question and I got everything else right (or at least, I got the same score as everyone else).

I have my first chem test tomorrow, but it’s supposed to be really easy (or at least, according to the upperclassmen)…

What I’m really worried about right now, however, is getting onto at least the C team for Science Bowl (tryouts are in a month) and getting a 780+ on the Bio SAT when I take it in October. I really want to do COSMOS next summer, and both will really improve my chances (as will an 80 on the math PSAT section, if I manage to get that). My classes are easy, but I’m doing really bad in chem (but apparently everybody has, like, a D in my teacher’s class the first month, then their grades shoot up exponentially–they get used to his formatting and his tests are pretty easy). My math grade isn’t the best, either, but math is generally easy for me, so hopefully I’ll get a high score on all the tests and quizzes from now on (I have to get an A in Honors Precalc to get into AP Calc BC). English is easy and fun, and so is History; I keep on forgetting to do Spanish homework (which probably isn’t very good), but it’s an easy class. I have no idea what my Engineering grade is because my teacher doesn’t post them anywhere; but I don’t think it’ll be too hard to get an A in the class).

@topaz1116‌ I went to COSMOS last summer and they don’t look at PSAT scores. But the science bowl will help since its an extracurricular, though I only had one year of middle school MATHCOUNTS and I still got in. I recommend UCSD COSMOS. They may not have the best clusters but I think they have the best program. Well maybe UCD is good too. Which campus are you going to apply to?

Just a little rant: we’re 4 weeks into our school year, and I already have a bunch of b’s In everything. I know I still have time to turn it around, but I just wonder why do i always start out the quarter so badly, and then I have to work hard to turn it around

@dsi411 Either Davis or Irvine–Irvine has the best clusters in particle/astrophysics, but I’m not sure if my parents will let me go that far away; and Santa Cruz doesn’t have any clusters that I want. I’ve also heard that Davis is the most competitive? But yeah, one of those two. I thought that COSMOS would consider PSAT scores if you have them? Either way, a lot of other programs prefer it if you have a standardized test (PSAT, ACT, or SAT) score.

I’m also thinking of applying to the Stanford Earth Sciences internship, but it has an acceptance rate of around 7% (it’s a local commuter internship, but there’s no cost).

@dsi411‌ OMG we didn’t get to present today! Now points will definietly get taken off!! We have had over a week to prepare and she keeps failing to memorize it and making excuses!!

@TheApplier‌ I am… We use James Stewart’s Calculus (7E) book… If I had a choice though, of course I would use the AoPS book! :D

@Spiral7‌ Do you mean you ran out of time in the period? I’m sorry. Hopefully it won’t hurt your grade too much.

We have no school tomorrow due to a staff development day and the new grading system is going to be up online tomorrow which means I’ll see what all my grades are like tomorrow. Yay!

Hah. Hah. Hah.

My grades…

I have 4 As (an A+ in English, an A- in History, an A in Engineering, and an A+ in Spanish) but I’ve got a C+ in Chem (this, I’m not too worried about–it’s just because offormatting errors, and according to upperclassmen, everyone has that grade in his class in the first month, but by the end of the semester, almost everyone has an A) and a C in Precalc (stupid, stupid, STUPID silly mistakes. But we have only done one chapter, and we’re halfway through the second. I need to get it up to an A so I can take Calc B/C next year; otherwise I’ll be stuck in A/B and my hopes of going to any somewhat-good college for physics will be dashed on the floor).

But it’s my school’s fiftieth anniversary tomorrow (yay!) and every student gets cake.

Literally.

Like, they’re buying 22 huge sheet cakes for everyone; although the logistics of handing it out will probably be very annoying.

Also, we get extended lunch (although that means no read period, which is when I get much of my homework done; I suppose I’ll actually have to do it at home today xD).

My school just celebrated our tenth anniversary last year…but we didn’t get cake.

its almost 12 am and im still studying (ive been studying since 9) for APWH Test on 11 chapters!!! this is insane. i just got on the computer now for a break and i’m just so confused… Why am I putting myself through all this torture just to go to a good college. I love history but seriously is an 11/40 chapter test seriously neccessary. Sorry for the rant but I am seriously starting to lose it right now. On top of that, I have to translate and take notes on a puertoriqqueno thing for Spanish3 this is rediculous. Is it just me or are there more of mes out there struggling rn

@Mebehold‌ Don’t worry there are others like you, although I’ve never had an 11 chapter test…

Good news!! My ap world teacher scanned it (he may have made a mistake) and he says I got a 100 I’m so glad I spent all that time studying last night

Good job!

Wow today I had quite a surprise. So I go to check my grades on the new grading system and they’re pretty good! In order from highest to lowest:

AP English Lang- No grade posted yet
Acc. Pre-Calc- 103.57% A+
Spanish 2- 101.67% A+
AP Chemistry- 97.09% A+
AP World History- 91.80% A-

So I’m pretty happy…all As…then I realize…
PE2- 87.88% B
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???
I participate in everything! I run whenever we are told to run! I do all the stretches and even led stretches when I was forced to. And I have a B??? REALLY??? Now I have even more reason to hate this class. AGHHHHH!!!

^^how do you even have multiple classes over a 100…
