@topaz1116 my school is kind of like yours. In each grade, around 40% of students are advanced by two years in math, another 40 is a year advanced, and the last 20% are on-level. There is no one under level( other than like 5 ppl), and being on level in math is considered as being stupid. The thing I like about my school though is that even though we’re all academically driven, it’s not cutthroat.

@mdclassof2017
What do you mean by ahead two years? Like taking pre-calc?

1 kid takes AP Calc BC, 6 (2%) take Honors Pre-Calc, 50% are a year ahead (they will be taking Pre-Calc next year) and about 48% are average (they will be taking Pre-Calc senior year)… If you are on-level, that includes CP & Honors. If you aren’t, you have to be taking Honors.

You are lucky it isn’t cut throat for you. We have like the top 15% competing (granted, there are about 350 kids in my grade) and its rough.

Is it just my school or is it that what math class you takes determine how “smart” you are? (I use the term smart, meaning that it is just academic, not talents etc.)

My first Math Team meet is next week! Our first SciOly meeting is in like 3 weeks. Can’t Wait!!!

At my school there are sophomores in Geometry to AP Calc AB. There are probably some higher or lower but I wouldn’t know. The sophomores in AP Calc AB had to do some special summer thing to be in that class. I didn’t do that so I’m just in Acc.Pre-Calc. Whether you are taking AP Calc AB or Acc.Pre-Calc we’ll still be doing AP Calc BC next year. In my math class there are mostly sophomores, many juniors just do regular pre-calc.

My APUSH teacher told us that out of his 40 students, only six essays deserved a grade. The highest was a C+… only one person got that.

@livelaugh7 For us, your math class sort of does. Some people move or had special circumstances that didn’t allow them to take the test to skip a year of math, so they’re in Algebra II (the normal sophomore math course). I know a girl who moved from the UK, and she’s stuck in Geometry (our freshman-year normal math course) because of the weird credit transfers and their math system there.

But it’s weird that people on the normal track at your school only get to Precalc… For my school, the normal track would mean Calculus senior year. Even if you’ve skipped a grade in math, you’re allowed into nonhonors classes once you get to high school; I know a girl who’s taking nonhonors Precalc because she doesn’t want the stress of honors and she doesn’t want to take BC next year (only AB) (but all the people in her class thought she was a new junior xD).

I just found out that since around 40 people sign up for Multivar senior year, they randomly choose people for one class. I know a senior who didn’t get in… Now I’m really scared (I just hope that around 60 people from my grade get an A in Honors Precalc, which means they can take BC next year and Multivar senior year).

I’m one of around 6 sophomores in my class of 30-ish. But I’m pretty friendly with the juniors near me and a few sophomores also sit near me, so it’s better than last year (when I had no freshman friends in my class–there were only annoying guys and two girls I don’t really know–and I didn’t really talk to the sophomores).

@topaz1116

There are a lot of “dumb” people at my school. There are almost no special circumstances at my school (except for the sophomore in AP Calc BC this year)…

Freshman year: you can take Honors or CP (regular) Algebra 1 or Honors Algebra 2.

Sophomore year: you take either Honors or CP Geometry (so Algebra 1 and 2 students combined)

Junior year: If you took Algebra 1 you take either H or CP Algebra 2. If you took Algebra 2, you take H Pre-Calc or move down to CP (Pre-Calc at my school uses a college textbook so the rigor is that of a college class) ** you can double up and take AP Stats if and only if you are in H Pre-Calc

Senior year: If you got a B+ or higher in Pre-Calc H and got teacher rec, you take AP Calc BC. If you got a lower grade or just don’t want to or whatever, you take AP Calc AB (or drop down to Calc Honors or take AP Stats). If you took CP Pre-Calc, you take Calc H (no other option). If you were in Algebra 2 junior year, you take either H or CP Pre-Calc AND/OR AP Statistics

If you hacked the schedule (like I or the other 6 people did), senior year, you take Multi-Variables as an independent study with Stanford online.

The Honors classes (except for English) aren’t even Honors tbh. They seem like regular classes. The CP classes are the ‘dumbed down’ classes.

Good Luck getting into MultiVar :)

@livelaugh7 Our regular classes, according to people from other schools who moved to ours, are equivalent to honors classes at other schools… I don’t know what our honors classes are. It depends on the class and your teacher, though. I had a horrible teacher for Honors Bio last year (we were slower than the nonhonors classes), although now that I’m studying for the SAT Bio and going to Science Bowl practices, I realized how much random information I learned from her class…

@topaz1116 Screw my school. I’m going to wherever you go.

But you are so lucky. I fall asleep in Spanish. Last year, our H Bio class was so easy. But maybe thats just me. 5 people dropped out of H Chem today so… I think its just me and the teachers.

@livelaugh7 Our Honors Chem teachers aren’t very good; one tests on stuff not learned in class and the other is really anal. But most of the rest of our science teachers are good. Our classes are full, since even people who aren’t really to the level of honors courses are in them.

Well, I don’t take AP, so I guess you would. IB is two years all together, so French 4 would probably equate to the first year of the diploma. I guess I wanted to ask how big the jump is from French 4 to AP, sorry:)
@livelaugh7

@livelaugh7

Lol. 95% of the people in my class are really dumb(at my school). A lot of the smarter people went to the Early College and I didn’t want to go because I think that it’s dumb. I’m taking AP Biology with three other students…

Hey, what do you guys think of junior year schedule

AP Chem (2 periods)
AP Calc BC (2 periods)
AP Lang
Honors Physics
Honors Spanish 4
Gym (Required)

@tigerman333 Seems good!

What about me?

JUNIOR YEAR
AP World History
AP Physics C
AP Calculus BC
Honors English – or AP Lang? idk
AP Chemistry
Spanish 4 H
Health & Fitness (required)

You should definitely take AP Lang. Taking two AP sciences might be a little much, but if you’re committed to science, I bet you could pull it off.

My junior plan (less rigorous but still, in my opinion, quite exciting) is as follows.

AP English 3
Pre-Calculus Honors (or Common Core Math 4 Honors—is that going to be a thing? I’m so confused)
AP Environmental Science
AP US History
Newspaper 2 Honors (yearly with editor position)
Peer Discovery 1 (TA for my 8th grade LA teacher)
Technical Theatre 1

How about this?

Honors English 11 (my school doesn’t offer Lang, only Lit for seniors)
AP Calc B/C (if I get in, otherwise it’s A/B; I really really really want to get into B/C though)
Journalism (school newspaper, but again, if I get in; otherwise Spanish 4)
AP Physics 1
AP Chem (I’m not sure if the sciences are too much? I’ll ask my counselor during the yearly meeting; but I love chem and physics)
US History (hahahaha I’m not taking APUSH; that would be murder)
Marching Band (for Colorguard; first semester only)

You guys are lucky if your school offers seven or eight regular periods; mine only does 6. There’s one 0 period course (Peer Resource; kinda the we-do-things-to-make-the-school-happy application class) and two 7th period courses (Marching Band, which is PE credit for people in band/other people who want PE credit and is first semester only; and Musical Theater).

Is it bad that I skipped out on social sciences for a year? I took two this year

@topaz1166 my school runs on block scheduling. In my opinion, it hinders teacher/student relationships (since you’ll usually only have most teachers for half of a year) but I couldn’t imagine taking 4 core classes and all my electives at once, but then again, I know block scheduled classes move much more rapidly so I’m probably just used to that.

Well I guess I’ll post my junior schedule too. Though it is IB so you may not be familiar with some of the classes.
AP Calc BC
AP Biology
IB SL Spanish Year 1
AP Art History (for VAPA requirement) or AP Psychology (For fun)
IB HL English Year 1
IB HL History of the Americas Year 1 (Same as AP US History at my school)

I think it’ll be pretty hard but oh well.
