Aww, thanks, @bfpoodle123. I had been a student of the Math Circle there since I was really little, so the Circle chair offered me an internship.
interning at a pharma company sounds interesting but my bio teacher finds everyone’s summer programs and she always places people in labs. I really don’t want to bother her because i really like her and I need her to continue liking me. Also by test scores I meant standardized tests.
@sternyc there are plenty of good engineering summer programs, just google it. A lot of the summer at fill in the blank programs have engineering. Since you want to do engineering and business, and you live in SoCal, maybe you can intern at a tech company?
The struggle of finding humanities-focused, selective summer programs for the summer.
@gonfaloniere if you live in/near a big city, try a museum internship. They can be VERY selective at large, famous museums.
@bfpoodle123 that’s what I was thinking! But 16 and up at most museums for volunteers, unfortunately, so that leaves one summer empty. I live right outside DC so I jumped for joy when I found out that the Holocaust Museum offers posts to translators 16+. Although you’d be surprised how many museums here are strict about who they allow to volunteer cough cough Library of Congress and their six week intensive training class
I am a minority also! I am officially American Indian… well that is what my birth certificate says. I am basically African American. This summer I will have color guard practice. I will hopefully volunteer at a hospital, win scholarships that I applied for several months ago, and go to medical/STEM summer camps. Speaking of time with friends, I just got back home from hanging out with friends.
@gonfaloniere I really wouldn’t worry, colleges don’t expect us to do anything exciting over the summer until after tenth. (I havOf course if you can find an internship it would be awesome but if not you can always volunteer! That’s what I want to do this summer but I’m already signed up for sleep away camp. Keep us posted!!!
@bfpoodle123 yeah SAT canp here, then marching band camp for three weeks
I wish my school had a marching band. I have no musical talent but I’ve been taking piano for 3 years so I can read notes and stuff. I feel like it would be a lot of fun to play a band instrument. Maybe join my school’s normal band but it’s only around ten people and lots of people try out for the piano spot.
@gonfaloniere Have you considered applying for TASP during junior year? I recently heard of it, and it sounds majorly awesome. It’s incredibly selective, however.
@gotmar I mean of course, but you know it’s selective when you don’t even see people on CC listing it under summer activities. TASP would be a dream.
@bfpoodle123 aw that’s sad I would suggest you could try out for jazz band piano but it doesn’t sound like your band program’s large enough to have one. You could always learn a new instrument of course.
Do you all think I should email the admissions officer of my state for Stanford?
@aspiringgirl I’d advise against it
Ok guys I really need help. Next year I have two choices for electives: Beginning Strings or Journalism. I really want to learn how to play a string instrument but I love writing and would like to improve. The journalism in my school is filled with the top 10% in their grade and I think it would be a great place to learn. So what do I choose?
AP Biology
AP World History
Precalculus
Honors English 10
Spanish 2
Beginning Strings or Journalism
Volleyball
I would go with your passion, so chose Journalism, but in the end its up to you.
Do journalism! You might be able to take outside lessons for stings.
@Cookiesandcreme I would advise you to take journalism.
Random question: do any of you take Latin?
@cookiesandcreme take journalism (that is, if you can get into it. By top 10% do you mean to say it’s selective or that smart people take it?). You can always take private lessons and join a youth orchestra if you feel so inclined.
