@Lbelle43 are those biology research programs residential? Are they free? Do the applications have five essays? Wow, good luck! I want to apply to some local ones.
The problem with summer programs is that most of them are expensive, and my family cannot afford them. I’ve been trying really hard to find some cheap and free programs, but those ones are super competitive.
@Kelvin82 Same! I wish I could afford a lot of those summer programs, heck I can barely afford summer classes.
@ak2018 Ha! 30 degrees F you say? Come to Maine. And don’t ever, ever put your cold hands under hot water, I think warm is alright but still, not the best idea.
Last year, anytime I walked to school it was -10 F and when I finally got into the school my glasses would fog up. It is really aggravating so I would take them off before I got into the school. That is one story now let me think of another…
I got stuck in my driveway and it took 2 hours to get out so I just didn’t go to school that day. Okay that wasn’t a horrible winter experience besides trying to get the car unstuck, but at least my parents let me stay home and I missed PE so another bonus.
@frazzledazzle Wait, the American Folk Festival!!! Those are pretty cool, but I don’t go to them. I had a Bio Test today and I aced it even though I just about at a heart attack because I didn’t really study! I guess that Netflix was very educational last night. How did your test go, oh wait, its not till tomorrow. Good Luck though and I hope all goes well! I think Genetics is our next unit, but I’m not sure…
@ak2018 @Madeline25 It is going to be a balmy 57 degrees on Christmas where I live - which is amazing compared to the usual 20 degree ones in recent years.
@Kelvin82 Yeah, I’m applying to Telluride too and a couple other science/coding/engineering programs just in case I don’t make it in. Most of the nicer (and free) programs are for Juniors only. :-w
@Kelvin82 Have you looked in the NIH funded research internships? They allow high schoolers and pay a striped. They look pretty cool, but you have to provide your own housing and my parents would never let me go back and forth in a stage city by myself.
I’m thinking I’m either going to one that you just sign up by April that’s on cancer research so I don’t have to worry about applications.
@tonyk16 I’ll pass :)) ! If I can barely handle 30°F, then I would most certainly die at -10°F. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a temperature below 15°F. I have glasses too, so I know how that feels.
Has anyone read Frankenstein yet? I’ve been kind of putting it to read it yet, since my English teacher said the first couple letters and chapters are pretty confusing. To encourage us to read the book, he gave us an extra 20 points if we actually buy it and show it to him, which I did. He’ll also give us an extra 25 points on the test if we annotate it and give it to him the day of the test. I honestly don’t know if I want to annotate the book. I hate annotating, but I feel like I’m going to need those points.
@ak2018 @Kelvin82 both programs are actually residential and pay a stipend. One requires four essays and the other requires one.
ak2018 - I haven’t read Frankenstein yet. But it can’t hurt to try and annotate it. If you try and find it doesn’t seem worth it then you can just stop probably, and then don’t hand it in. But definitely try, 25 points is a lot!
@Madeline25 what is the cancer research sign up program?
@Lbelle43 Clemson University’s CU Scholars in Human Oncology and Pathogensis
@madeline25 thanks for mentioning NIH. I wanted to apply, but my parents vetoed the idea.
@Lbelle43, what are the programs called?
I was really intrigued by COSMOS, but I was rejected last year.
@ak2018 I enjoyed reading Frankenstein. Yea, 25 points could boost your grade a lot.
A couple years ago up here in wonderfully cold Minnesota school had to be canceled for a few days because the windchill was -60 F.
@ak2018 @awesomepolyglot TJHSST has great online resources for physics. I found it online, great discovery. I would love to go there but I don’t even live in virgina.
@Lbelle43 I wanted to do an internship also with science. If you don’t mind me asking what state are the biology research programs you are applying to?
I am applying to a programming program. Also, in my school you have a paid internship the summer after junior but I also want to do an internship this summer if possible.
Lucky @Tedalkfan ! I wish my school would allow us the opportunity to do free internships.
So, does anyone have any holiday presents they hope they’ll get?
Tomorrow is my last day of school before break. I can’t wait to procrastinate studying for my midterms.
I celebrate Chanukah, and I got Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon and pre-ordered the special edition for Fire Emblem Fates. February cannot come fast enough. ;u;
I miss 11th grade year. So much chill in one year…
RIP best school year in high school.
@tonyk16 The AFF is amazing! I’ve volunteered at it for 7 years! I’m a co-lead of a division of it now.
@ak2018 I just want really basic stuff - an instrument stand, sheet music, books, and a tote bag.
@AMan236 We’re 10th grade.
I’m very happy today! I got a 93 on my Biology test (I thought I was going to fail), I kicked butt on my other 3 tests, and I changed my science fair project in a massive way for the better! Tomorrow I’m going to be at the school Poetry Out Loud competition all day (until I leave for a jazz concert at 12:30), so today was my last day of actual school before vacation!
I could have sworn you guys were talking about 11th grade. I’m losing my mind.
11th grade is a whole 'nother ball game. @AMan236
