High School Class of 2021

@Nkemdirim No, they just don’t include any classes taken in middle school because they aren’t considered high school classes yet, even if they are at a high school level.

Are you going to have to retake them? @raventhemage

@Nkemdirim No, I still get credit for it, but just middle school credit. I would have met the prerequisite for more advanced classes though (Algebra 2 H).

Oh okay then.

I have a general question though. How is HPA (honors point average) calculated?

That might be your school’s version of a weighted GPA. That means it’ll vary with your school, check with your counselor or check out your student handbook.

Okay. What’s the highest your hpa can go, though?

That still depends on your school!

Thank you!

Another freshie checking in here  intro: I live in a small town in northern wisco, I’m interested in biomedical research & want to be a pediatric surgeon. My schedule for freshman year:

College Prep Geometry (advanced track)

Agri Science

World History (self studying ap)

Biology (advanced track)

PE

English 9 (no honors)

Spanish 1

Concert Band

I kinda want to drop band and agri science… when I scheduled I wanted to go for a pre vet track, now I know that I much prefer pre med. I could also drop ME if I begged my GC and took the summer class. Our school only offers Spanish and German for languages, but I have a huge interest in learning Latin. Would I be able to self study online, and does anyone have any reccomendations?

@raventhemage thankyou! And geesh that’s unfortunate. Also how does people who are going to freshmen year of high school already know what they want to be in life?!

Hey @destinedforND !! I understand where you are coming from because I also want to be a surgeon. There are a couple online websites that you can use for classes. I live in Florida, so I use FLVS. It is a Florida online virtual school you can use if you live in Florida for free. I am not sure how much it costs if your not a resident. What you can do is check if Wisconsin has an online virtual school or check if your future high school has some classes. That can help alot.

@Potter3846 sometimes its because of life experiences like I want to be a neurologist or neurosurgeon because of my aunt. They could also just really like the field but most freshmans wont ending up doing what they wanted to be this year!

Haha, I’ve never had any major life events happen to me. The last time I moved, I was five, none of my friends and family have had any major injury/sickness/death of any kind, my family is well-to-do and doesn’t have any major problems…the only thing guiding my career choices is the fact that I like science…

@Nkemdirim thank you! We do have a program called Wisconsin virtual academy, the only thing is they charge extra for AP classes and our one parent self employed household cant really afford on top of exam fees and other prep materials. I was thinking of going to the school board and asking for assistance, has anyone ever tried that? Thanks

Anecdotally, German was way easier than Latin, and much more useful.

@destinedforND I think the school or your district can waive the fees. But you should call the school/district ahead of time to make sure.

@Nkemdirim thank You!

@awesomepolyglot the structure and dynamics of the language interest me in particular; in terms of practicality, I would continue taking Spanish as well as learning latin. I do have German heritage, but the language itself isn’t that interesting to me, and you could argue that Spanish would be more useful for an aspiring physician such as myself.

Hey, Wisconsin graduated Senior here. You should look into the the Wisconsin Youth Options program. You can use it to take courses not offered at your school at any Wisconsin public or private university. And unlike AP courses, it counts as college credit on your university transcript and it also gets weighted on your high school transcript. Best part is it is free (including textbooks) and you can use it at online universities (Like UW Colleges online or UW-Madison Extension). Also, there is something called course options but it is more complicated.

@trent6543 wow, thank you very much! I heard about this program but didn’t know it applied to online colleges as well. I didn’t think it would be of much use to me, as the nearest UW two year is forty five minutes away, but I will definitely look into it now!
