High School Class of 2021

And my extracurriculars this year are okay-

JV Basketball
V Track (probably, there are only 2 throwers and me)
Church softball team
Church youth group
Key Club
Spanish Club
Summer job

I’m pretty proud of my ECs, they’re a decent start for freshman year IMO.

My extracurriculars next year are
Art club, health club, French club (maybe), key club, hospital volunteering, track, and shadowing a physician (maybe, my grandma has a close friend that is a physician and is asking if I can shadow him)
Not that great but it’s stuff I’m passionate about.

Decided not to go to the STEM school so here’s my schedule this year:

Honors physical science ( our district makes everyone take it in 9th)
Honors algebra 1
Honors American world history 1
Honors English 9
French 1
AP computer science principles
Art 1
3D design and modeling
Business

Has anyone else started yet? I started the 2nd. I was accepted into and had FA for a boarding school but at the last minute I decided I didn’t want to go, so I stayed at my public HS. Not a bad decision from me.

High school so far’s been decent (it’s only been 3 days). It’s a lot different than middle school. I’m blessed with the fact that my middle school is the only school that goes to my high school, so no worries about tons of new kids. We get a lot more freedom. I’m not used to it. We also got Macbooks which are really cool, though I haven’t gotten a charger for it yet because the school didn’t order enough.

Lunch is pretty decent, the ala carte has a way better selection than my middle school did. At the MS, we could only pick 2 things from the ala carte, but now there is no limit. This could pose a problem, but whatever. So far my favorite things are the fudge popsicles and the Oreo pudding. My lunch has a solid mix of all four grades. Luckily, I have a bunch of my friends in it so there’s no worry about who I’ll sit with.

Having classes with upperclassmen is nervewracking. I have no problems with sophomores but juniors and seniors are different to me. I don’t know barely any of them and I’m an awkward 14 year old so I’m scared they’re like making fun of me behind my back. Oh well, I know I just need to work hard in class and stuff.

The classes themselves haven’t shown that they’ll be incredibly challenging. The only class I’m worried about is Environmental Science, because technically I’m not allowed to take the class, but I must’ve been approved for a reason so I’ll try and convince myself that it’ll be fine.

Sorry, this was really long, I just needed to ramble about my first week!

My summer Biology class just ended last week, and I finished with a 99, so I’m starting off my high school transcript with a 4.0, not that it matters much since it’s just one class.

I’ll be traveling to China to visit family during the last two weeks of summer, which will be a problem because of the huge jet lag issues, since China is exactly 12 hours ahead (exact opposite of the sleep/awake rhythms I should be getting used to)…

We have exactly 182 school days per school year, since the federal minimum is 180 days? I think? Leaving room for 2 snow days or whatever. If you start early I’m assuming you end early, we end school in late June, and start in early September.

My school will be filled with new kids (well not really, I’ll be a new kid), since my middle school primarily fed into a different high school, but I chose to be in this one. Honestly, I’m not that scared of being the new kid, but I could see how it could potentially be a problem.

I’ll keep you guys updated on what happens.

Hey guys, excited to see there’s already a thread for the class of 2021. I really hated middle school, especially the 8th grade, so I’m hoping high school will be a better experience!

@raventhemage Your situation for Science Olympiad is so similar to mine, I’ll be going to a competitive school (always places in the top 10 in Nationals) that’s in a different district than my own. I’ve done SO for the past three years, and loved it! My school as a whole never had any major success, since the team was pretty poorly run and had almost zero funding from the school, even though there was a lot of interest for it.

The events I did were all over the place, but my favorite ones were Crave the Wave and Microbe Mission (got 4th and 1st place for them at State). I’m planning to do Experimental Design, Microbe Mission, and Fermi Questions (Not really sure about my choice to do Fermi Questions, but it seems somewhat interesting based on reading its description. Has anyone here had any experience with the event?) in the upcoming season. Assuming I even make it onto the team, that is. I’m really hoping to make the cut onto the B team, at least, but I know it will take a ton of work and studying.

Ugh, I only have 5 days until school starts…

i have a list of clubs to join

  1. newspaper
  2. lorem ipsum
  3. lit
  4. girls 4 girls
  5. possibly mun? i’ve done it for the past 3 years so I probably will
  6. currency mag
  7. diversity association
  8. young dems
  9. student council if it’s open to underclassmen
  10. political and current events
  11. philosophy
  12. programming union
  13. teach wallingford
i mean clearly i’ll have to cut it down at some point. I’m really excited for high school! i’m too lazy rn to capitalize everything

I joined Student Council! We’re voting for class officers soon, so I hope I get voted into President or Vice President.

Soon my Environmental Science class is going on a river rafting trip. I’m excited for it!

@thorongil I forget if I’ve mentioned it before, but my prospective Scioly events are: Herpetology, Microbe Mission, Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology, Dynamic Planet, Fermi Questions, and Materials Science. Of course, I’ll have to get rid of a few to even consider the possibility of getting on the team, but I’m definitely going to do Herp, Eco, and Dynamic.

Fermi seems like it’s only resurfaced after around a decade of inactivity. I tried some practice over the summer and I’ve found that I am grossly incompetent in the event…but perhaps I can get better.

btw, you can find me as “Raven” on scioly.org

Greetings, all. Glad to hear that you guys are doing well integrating into high school, at least the few of you that have already started.

I go to a somewhat small school in a rural region of North Carolina. It feels a bit stunted when compared to other, bigger schools in the state, but opportunities are available to those who seek them out.
I hope to go for two years and transfer into a state boarding school. That is my current focus.

Alas, I am not at all aware at what the high school has to offer extracurricular-wise. Save for robotics, which I am almost certainly going to be doing. I believe there will be a club-fest going on sometime during the first month of school? I’ll definitely be attending that.

My schedule for the year consists of the following classes:

  • Math II (Hn)
  • Latin II
  • Vocal Music A (Hn)
  • Vocal Music B (Hn)
  • Environmental Science (Hn)
  • Pre-AP English I (Counts as an Honors class)
  • World History (Hn)
  • Physical Education

Not awful! Could be more impressive, I’m sure, but given the circumstance I think I’ve done the best I possibly could.

Are any of y’all taking AP classes this year? I’m taking AP CS A and I’m self studying AP Environmental Science

@pldmua2003 I’m taking AP computer science.

My school changed one of the courses I signed up for to a year long course, that means they’ll have to take that course off my schedule or drop another one. I really don’t want a study hall, but I’m just waiting for schedule pick up day on Monday then I’ll talk to the counselor about changing my schedule. I don’t think they should change the length of courses after everyone has already done scheduling.

I’m taking an Environmental Science class and studying AP Environmental Science along with it. I’ll probably take the exam.

My school doesn’t offer any APs to freshmen, and frankly, I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that sort of thing when I’m being acquainted with high school. I’ll be taking 2-4 AP classes a year from 10th to 12th grade, which I think is sufficient to be competitive in any top-notch school. Besides… I kinda wanna focus on getting on the Science Olympiad team freshmen year…hahahahaha hopefully.

Is it a bad thing I’ll be missing freshmen orientation? I’ll be away visiting family when it’s taking place…hopefully I won’t miss anything important.

My school messed up my schedule. My honors English teacher emailed me saying I wasn’t on her roster. So they put me in regular college prep classes, I can’t even get it fixed because it’s the weekend now and Monday is schedule pick up. I’m going to have to go talk to the counselor after I pick up my schedule if it’s wrong. Im not even sure if they’re going to put me in honors now because my first semester grades in 8th grades weren’t so good (I had health issues) but got the help I needed and did amazing second semester so my mom talked to the school to make sure I was placed in honors. This is going to mess up my chances at a lot of things and I already did the summer assignments.

I’m officially in Student Council and Spanish Club! I want to do Quiz Bowl but I’m not sure if it’ll coincide with basketball.

Basketball workouts start soon, and I’m incredibly excited. I love basketball.

Had a decent first week (even getting up at 5:30 am doesn’t suck as much as I thought it was going to.) Been pretty easy so far - DE Precalculus teacher gives tons of extra credit, aced first Chinese test, choir conductor is less evil than usual, H English and H Chem are super easy to grasp, AP World teacher is amazing and I want her to teach all my classes (she also teaches AP Psych, which I’m selfstudying probably, so I can ask her for clarification on things if needed.) Three out of my six classes are with all sophomores/juniors - in two of them they kinda ignore me, but in Precalc everyone is super smart/nice to me and I’m now friends with the older sister of this one girl I know.

Also had four JV crew practices - got back from the last one a few hrs ago actually. It’s soooo much better than middle school crew, and my starting ERG (rowing machine) score is surprisingly decent despite not having rowed all summer. Joined Speech & Debate this week, and I’m gonna join Science Olympiad, Mu Alpha Theta, an out-of-school choir, and (possibly) MUN and this one tech club my friend wants me to join next week?

tl;dr 10/10 would first week of high school again. Good luck to y’all

Had schedule pick up today! They were able to make me a schedule the same as my last. Tomorrow is orientation, my school is so big and confusing me and my friends couldn’t find our classes. They had tables for some of the clubs out, so I got papers for art club, key club, and speech and debate (because my English teacher made me).

I’m trying to cram a month of running into 9 days so that I can make JV field hockey (which won’t happen I suck haha). I’m reviewing all of my summer reading and also Khan Academy-ing Physics, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II in hopes that I can switch to a different class. I’m trying to figure out flights and hotel rooms and what I want to see in my hometown before I leave. I also have to pack. I spoke to my Choate mentor about the club that I wanted to start.
