@raventhemage It’s not easy, but not too hard either. I have a 100 in my history amd science classes. My lowest grade is a 92 in Algebra 1 Honors, but I have test corrections to work on and our test today was easier than the review sheet.
@raventhemage, PE online is on the honor system of actually doing the physical exercise. but you do have test. The physical activity is of your choosing.
@FuturePICUNurse Alrighty. At our school, everything is way too easy, and the only advanced option is for math (I feel like I already said this…? Idk…) However our science teacher is very understanding and is allowing the advanced science students to test out of unit sections and have independent science study instead, which I think is great! As for now, I have all 100 in all my classes and a 99 in Geometry H (the only advanced option… )
Anyways I was just asking to see the difficulty differences. I think my school is trying too hard to level education, and rumor is, the school board has denied advanced classes for subjects besides math several times, although the reasons may be under-funding.
How are your teachers teaching? Are they using more lecture-style, hands-on, or just giving you worksheets and having you copy down the answers from the textbook? I think my teachers this year are considerably better than my teachers last year in terms of teaching things.
@VANURSEPRAC I wish my school had that option! The mandatory CP level health and PE classes bring down GPA too much in high school.
@raventhemage I will list it by class.
English- More lectures, lots of reading and vocab
Algebra- Good mix between lectures and hands-on
History- Straight book work, very little lectures
Science- Same as Algebra
@FuturePICUNurse Oh wow, last year my history teacher just had us take notes on the textbook, and do worksheets, he didn’t teach AT ALL.
Anyways, this year for me:
History: Mostly lectures and philosophy stuff, with some activities (not hands-on though)
Health: So far we only watched an alcohol documentary and wrote five sentences describing ourselves.
Family Consumer Sciences (FCS): Teacher shows us how to do stuff, and then we do it. Currently making pajama pants.
Geometry: Fast-paced lectures, no need to take notes (she gives us the notes already), and worksheets for hw on the learned class material.
Science: ALL hands-on
Spanish: Healthy mix of lectures and fun games
English: same as Spanish
Maybe I’m asking too many questions :-S but does your school have Science Olympiad???
@raventhemage Never stop asking questions! Lol… Anyways, I do not think so but I am not sure.
@FuturePICUNurse Okay.
:bz How’s life been going?
@raventhemage Pretty good. I stopped someone from committing suicide yesterday.
@FuturePICUNurse That definitely good (the prevention part, not the suicide part.)
It saddens me to think that high school is going to be so stressful. Sometimes I don’t think I will be able to handle the workload :-S but then there are the people I know that are doing well and are still sleeping 8 hours a day, and then I feel better.
Wow! The Class of 2021 already! My advice: Have fun in 8th grade and enjoy the last bits of freedom before testing and high school drama. It might seem like it’s far off, but trust me, you’ll want to lay back a bit. I wish I would’ve told myself that in 8th grade, instead of worrying about the SAT and AP class selections. High school is stressful only if you make it that way; start out slow and adjust to your new surroundings, and then take off from there. Find out your interests starting now, and in freshman year, and explore what you like. That way, you’re setting yourself for success in the long run rather than getting worked up to early
Ok I guess there are more of us here than I thought! I’m not on this site much, I don’t want to worry too much about college yet haha. My schedule this year is:
Pre-AP Algebra 2
Pre-AP Geometry
French 1B
Science Honors
English Honors
Programming in Java
PE
US History Honors
'Ello! I’ve lurked on CC for God knows how long, but now that people from the class of 2021 are actually starting to congregate on here I figured it was time to actually make an account. Nice to see that I’m not the only eighth grader on this site
Anyways, my schedule for this year is the following (the first three count as high school credit, and I have a 96 or above in every one of them, so I feel like I’m doing pretty well for myself):
Algebra 2 Honors
Biology Honors
Chinese 1 Honors
U.S. History
8th grade English
Choir
I’m also “self studying” (i.e. taking an extracurricular class at a local computer lab, which people have been known to score 4’s and 5’s on the AP exam after completing) computer science. I’ve got a pretty good grasp on the subject so far, but who knows if I’ll end up actually taking the AP exam in June. Still a nice thought.
Good luck to all y’all throughout HS!
@chrysalism Wow! That must be a lot of hard work. I wouldn’t get too involved in AP classes and exams just yet. You might burn out before it really counts.
I’m really enjoying my Algebra class. My teacher is amazing and I really understand the topics. I’m more than halfway done with my Spanish 1 class, which I take online. I have a 98% A, and am on track to start high school with a 4.25 GPA.
Oh wow, you guys are really prepared for high school. Unfortunately (I think I already remarked this?) my middle school doesn’t allow us any course flexibility, so here’s my schedule for this year:
Normal 8th Grade Classes: Science, English, Social Studies, Art/Family Consumer Sciences, PE/Health/Orchestra/Chorus, and Spanish
The one Honors class I have (it’s not even weighted, since I’m taking it MS, and I don’t get HS credit for it, the teacher just teaches at an Honors level so that we are eligible for taking Algebra 2 H which has Geometry H as a prerequisite): Geometry H
How I wish I could take those classes
@FuturePICUNurse That’s wonderful to hear! It sounds like you’re doing exceptionally well, and it’s always good to be taking classes you enjoy (and even better if classes you enjoy coincide with classes you need to take to graduate.) As for myself, I’m pretty stoked that all my teachers are decent and that this is the first year where we’re learning entirely new material in every class.
Also, is your online Spanish 1 class only a semester long? Because if so, that’s neat - and are you planning to take Spanish 2 second semester, or wait another year before continuing?
@raventhemage There’s no need to worry. Colleges only expect you to take the most advanced classes your school offers; given that a sizable number of American middle schools don’t offer much in the way of anything more advanced than the basic curriculum, no administrator is going to care (or be allowed to care) if you weren’t able to take a certain course early simply because your school didn’t enable you to. Most students don’t start taking high school courses until, well, high school. And given that you’re already on this site planning in the eighth grade, I have no doubt you’re already hella prepared for the next four years, motivation-wise :>
It would be nice if we could get something going, like in the 2018, 2019, 2020 high school class threads. Perhaps we could post grade updates, or what we got on tests, like they are doing. Or we could generally just rant or chat about life.
Well, what I’m upset about is my science teacher’s weighted grades. So far I’ve gotten 100 on every single assignment but one, a lab, in which I received 13/15 because I did not include measurements on one of the items. This dropped my grade down from a 100 to a 97, since my teacher counts that as a lab grade, which is 45% of my grade. I only have one other lab counting as a grade so far, so as of now, my lowest grade is in science. :(( And I"m supposed to be good at science?!?! I mean, I’ve gotten way more points taken off in math class, and my grade is higher than my science class grade. With my science teacher’s weighted grades, no matter how many 100s I receive on tests, my grade won’t come up unless if I get 100s on labs, and we only have one lab left in the quarter.
That was a little something I needed to get off my shoulder I suppose, and I shouldn’t be awake right now at 12:28 am, but…well…uh…
@raventhemage Dude, I think you need to lighten up and chill out. You don’t need a 100% in every class, that’s ridiculous and extremely stressful to give yourself that goal. I’m sophomore now, I’ve never gotten perfect 100s in any classes… A 97% does NOT mean that you aren’t good at science, I mean really?? That’s crazy talk. I’m pretty great at science, and I have an 86 in my science class right now. I still consider that a great grade, and I’m proud of it.
Chill out. Enjoy middle school while you can.
@Shanban1607 While I agree that a 97% is still an amazing grade, you telling us to “chill out” doesn’t change anything. We are still going to work as hard as we can and nobody can change that.
@FuturePICUNurse I understand that, but eventually you all will learn that as long as it’s an A/B, everything’s all good. Grades don’t matter as much as everyone stresses them out to matter.
This is not saying you should aim for a B, of course. Aim for an A. But if you happen to get a B, it’s no big deal. I used to think I’d die if I got a B back in middle school. Now I’m sooo happy to pull out a B in my extremely rigorous AP classes.
