High School Class of 2021

Hello youngins…mom of 2021 daughter, she too puts a lot of pressure on herself about her grades. I know she is capable of making As every six weeks at this stage. Her school work is not hard at all. So there is no reason for her not to make As. But she is a kid that needs very little push from me.

She has no desire to set up her own CC account. And thinks I am addicted to this site (she is right).

I love reading about what yall are doing. I bet your parents are very proud of all of ya’ll.

I just feel like with the “easy” middle school curriculum and assignments, a 100 in middle school shouldn’t be so hard to achieve, but my science teacher is making it relatively impossible, is all. I understand that As and Bs in high school are different than As and Bs in middle school.

My school recently changed their grading system so that a 93+ is a 4.0 instead of a 92+. I kind of feel bad for the high schoolers who are aiming for good GPAs, since it’s now even harder to get it.

Alas, I completely agree that stressing out this early is bad, but I just can’t help it. I also use CC as a way to vent (thank god for the venting thread) while still keeping my anonymity. I am a believer in eustress, although sometimes it becomes distress.

@raventhemage I do agree w/ Shanban in that you really, really don’t need to stress about a 97. It’s pretty much impossible to get a 100 in any class for a yearly average unless the teacher basically isn’t teaching; there’s always that one test you didn’t realize you had, that one lab where you didn’t realize something extra was required, that one teacher who absolutely refuses to grade assignments like a normal human being with morals and empathy would. We’re only human, after all. If you’ve got above a 95 in every class, you should pat yourself on the back and realize that you’re doing extremely well!

I know plenty of people who should be worrying about their GPA (i.e. 2.5 or below unweighted) and are completely confident about their abilities. Trust me, you’re not one of the people who should be worrying - if you really want to work on something, just work on perfecting study habits, note taking skills, etc. before you enter a class that’s going to go on your transcript.

Plus, the reason you got a lower grade is just because you forgot to include measurements on a single item, right? Now you know what the teacher wants, so just keep that in mind for the next one. (This quarter, I got an 80 on my first Bio Honors lab because I didn’t write it up the way the teacher wanted, so I remembered to write it up correctly for the other labs and ended up with a mid-90 lab grade average - which was further brought up to a high A by my test scores. No one’s perfect, and now you know how to get the grade you want on the next lab.)

All you need to worry about is just getting the best possible grades that you can achieve. College confidential is a place to refer to when you need help picking out high school classes, college app advice, etc. You’re not picking out high school classes at the moment nor applying to colleges so I don’t understand the purpose of this thread. Stop stressing over school and enjoy being a teenager!

Okay.

I remember when I was in 8th grade I was so excited to make the thread for the class of 2019. I made a draft for the thread and waited for months to post it. I love your enthusiasm, but I also have to warn you to enjoy middle and high school because the time really does fly by.

GRADE UPDATE TIME!!!

Advanced Dance- 100%. This class is actually hard. We are having a showcase in 2 weeks and it is worth 300 points.

Spanish 1 Online- 98.08%. I have one more chapter to finish and I can start Spanish 2 online right after.

Advanced English- 90%. This teacher never grades anything. I had to ask her to put in a test grade last quarter.

Algebra 1 Honors- 101%. I LOVE this class. So easy for me.

Advanced U.S History- 97%. He is so unorganized. He lost my friend’s work 5 times. We had a kid cry in his class because the teacher was so unorganized.

Advanced Science- 91%. She’s crazy. I turned in an assignment one day late and she wouldn’t even give me half credit. She also smells really bad and doesn’t wear a bra.

:slight_smile: I will post my finalized 1st Q grades:

O = Outstanding, A+ = 97+

Social Studies: 100.885 A+ - Our teacher does not give us any graded assignments besides his tests. The great thing about this, is that his tests are super easy except for the essay portion, but he gives us the essay material beforehand and offers to grade any essays we write beforehand and give us feedback. He also gave us extra credit points at the end of the quarter, because we were the “best period” of the day, so that’s why I have more than 100.

Orchestra: 94 O - I didn’t come to two rehearsals, and they count for a participation grade, that’s all.

PE: 100 O - Just participation.

Health: 99 O- I got 4/5 for some journal prompt thing and that dropped my grade by one point, idk how, probably because she rounds.

Chorus: 100 O - Just participation.

Family and Consumer Sciences: 99 O

Geometry H: 97 A± Hardest class I have right now, a lot of people get Cs and Bs on the test, so I’m hardly scraping past an A+.

Science: 98.88 A+ - Not a difficult class, but the labs are teamwork, and they’re worth 45% of the grade, although I did get 100% on every single one of this quizzes (mostly because the questions are really easy and he drills the answers in our heads and gives us pretests that are very useful.)

Spanish: 99 A+ - I love Spanish class, and my teacher, she’s great. No comment.

English: 99.48849 - Insanely impossible grammar tests, but gives a lot of extra credit chances.

Hey! I am also part of the class of 2021, my grades definitely aren’t as perfect as yours but I am also currently looking towards my future. I have already decided on career/college choices (and backups) and I was wondering if any of you have done the same so I could see if we have the same interests.

@AbsKelsay Hi, nice to see a new face in this thread! Even if your grades aren’t “perfect” you still have the motivation to be looking towards your future, which is v good.

As for myself, I’ve dreamed of attending an Ivy or the equivalent since I was little (MIT has always been a goal of mine :slight_smile: ), but a) getting in is a crapshoot even with the right credentials and b) if I could get a free or partial ride to a state school on a state-mandated scholarship I’d be over the moon at that as well. Of course it’s much too early to make any finalized decisions, so I’ll just explore what appeals to me as the years go by.

I’d like to be a biochemical or biomedical engineer most likely, as the subject of genetics has always been a point of interest to me.

What are your career/college choices? I’d be interested to hear them.

(Also, grade update: currently a 94 in biology but a 97+ in everything else. Received a 97 on my alg 2 midterm, which I’m hella proud of, but the rest of said midterms are yet to be taken.)

I haven’t really decided what to do with my life, and I believe there’s still time to ponder. I definitely want to pursue something to do with science, though, and of course I want to get into a good college.

I would really like to be an orthopedic surgeon but anything in the medical field would be great honestly. As for college choices, I have a thing for overplanning my future so there’s a lot of choices.

Here is what I am considering (there’s a large variety):
Biola, This is my top choice even though it’s the easiest to get into because I love their education system, campus, and beliefs;
NYU, it would be fun to live in NY city;
Stanford, it’s a really nice school and my friend wants to go there as well;
Cornell, I’m not really big on the Ivy Leagues because they’re so liberal but I do enjoy Cornell’s campus and system;
Berkeley, a lot of my choices are in California because that’s where I’m from and I have a lot of family there;
UCLA, I have a cousin that went there and it’s a very good school;
Brown, why not;
UW, I live in Washington, so I qualify for in-state tuition, also my brother’s friend goes there;
APU, my small group leader goes there and it’s really similar to Biola;
UC Riverside, they have a good medical program.

I know there’s a lot but it’s over four years away, so there’s a lot of time to figure things out.

Hi! I’m a junior. If you have any questions about high school, feel free to contact me.

I will say this: Being on this website as an eighth grader is a bad idea. I was a sophomore when I discovered this, and it’s a HUGE blow to the ego to see students who are making scientific discoveries, working with professors in a research lab, and taking 999991919192929 AP classes is a HUGE blow to the ego. I started working towards CC standards, and that’s a really stressful experience.

Although checking around this website as a freshman I would say is a good idea. I’m assuming you guys are considering Ivies/highly selective schools. Before you read any of those “results threads” or start a “chance me” thread, check out these articles:

I’m not trying to discourage you or anything. I’m just saying, be careful. Don’t become an overachiever robot, because being an overachiever robot sucks. (I’d know.)

I agree with @cliffnotes when I saw this thread, I was pretty shocked. But then again, all of you must be overachievers.

Thanks for the link!

Debates for my classmates were this week, and I don’t think I did very well, but I’m sure I won the debate. Hopefully I’ll get an A on it, as it is worth a lot of points.

By the way, the *** is prepscholar

Also, I just realized I repeated myself twice in the paragraph. Yes! High school teaches you how to express yourself!

I just got braces yesterday and my mouth hurts so bad! I had to relearn how to chew and smile because it’s different with braces on.

LOL, my friend got braces a month ago, and he just kind of refused to talk because it hurt so much. XD

FINALLY WINTER BREAK THOUGH! Today is the first day of winter break for me (and most other kids in my school district). I feel so relieved.

Have a Merry Christmas Eve guys!
