High school course question

I will be applying to Columbia College regular round, and I had a question about the importance of high school language classes to admission.

I only took two real years of language in high school: first year Latin in 11th grade and second year Latin in 12th grade. This is because I had a terrible experience with second year Spanish in 9th grade (I got As both semesters but I learned virtually nothing and was unable to continue on with the language), and was unable to get into Latin as a sophomore. How badly is this going to hurt me in the admissions process and Columbia (and I guess at Yale, too; I applied there early)? Assuming the rest of my application is pretty solid, do I still stand a chance?

you have three years of language, yes you still stand a chance.

They're not of the same language, though...

Also, is it going to hurt me even more considering I plan on majoring in Chinese?

no it will not. did you do well in latin?

As of course, but I haven't taken any standardized tests in the subject. Would getting a 700+ on the Latin subject test help significantly?

any 700+ would help. but not taking the test won't hurt you. basically..its not a big deal! quit worrying.

If you tried to take Latin sophomore year, but you couldn't for scheduling reasons or whatever, maybe you could ask your GC to mention that in his/her recommendation. If it was out of your control, I can't imagine they'd hold it against you. Good luck.

Nobody's even going to notice, let alone care. No sense in calling attention to it with some excuse. It's not like you want to major in the classics.
