So, my middle school offered Math 1 and English 1 credit to 8th graders before going into high school. This started me off in English 2 Honors and Math 2 Honors freshman year of high school. Now, as a sophomore, I’m taking AP English Lang with English 3 and next year I will take AP English Lit with English 4. Senior year, there are no other English core courses available to take. I know most colleges require 4 years of English - will the English I took in middle school, since it’s a high school course, count as one of those 4 years since there’s a blank in senior year? Thanks!
Yes! All high school courses will appear on your transcript and therefore count as credits whether they were taken in high school or not. Colleges will know that you did not have any core English classes available in senior year. By the way, why does your district allow you to take every English course one year early? I can see the reasoning where there is an extra class available to seniors, but it does not really make any sense to take every class in a subject one year early even though there are only 4 years of classes to take anyways.
I agree completely about it not making sense. Everyone that took English 1 in middle school realized how stupid it was for the district to do that when we learned we’d have no classes to take senior year. Counsellors recommended that we take a filler English elective sophomore year instead of English 3, but most of us didn’t, because it would make taking English 1 in middle school useless. Our class was the first year English in middle school was offered, so I’m guessing we were Guinea pigs, hahaha. I’m glad I took math early so I can have room to take more APs, but English made no sense. Of course, none of us knew that in middle school- they basically just put all the students in gifted programs into the class.
You cannot assume all high schools have the same format for their transcript. If you have fulfilled all the graduation requirements for your HS, but some of those required classes don’t appear on your transcript, then your GC should explain this in his/her rec and/or in the Additional Info section of the application.
