Hello, I am interested in applying to Indiana U as a direct admit to Kelley. Assuming I get accepted to IU, I would meet all of the requirements except for the GPA. I have a 1520/1600 SAT (800 Math) and 2300+ with writing. My unweighted average by the end of junior year will probably be a 3.5. Does Kelley accept students by use of computerized data or would they recalculate my transcript into a weighted one? I am pretty sure I would meet the GPA requirements if it is weighted. My school does not rank either.
Thanks!

I believe most schools look at your unweighted averages (as weighting is different for each school) or they look at the CONTEXT of your grades compared to the rest of your class. They have no way of transferring everyone to a weighted average anyway. Your SAT scores seem to be very high, what’s stopping you from raising your GPA? I’m sure many other people with similar GPAs have gotten in, so focus on other areas of your application as well and you will be a competitive applicant.

The thing is school is basically coming to a close so it would be hard to raise my GPA considerably. Also, on Kelley’s site it lists that everyone who automatically meets the following requirements will be accepted to Kelley: acceptance to IU, SAT greater or equal to 1270, and GPA of 3.7 or higher

You will have to petition for DA, but you’re chances are extremely high with that SAT score.

Do initial DA acceptees receive more scholarships than later DA’s?

Apply by November 1st to be considered for scholarships. Your GPA may prevent you from receiving the higher award amount. I agree with hkem123 that you have a good chance by petitioning ( and if your fall semester GPA rises - that would be something to highlight in your petition).

So admissions won’t consider my unweighted average “higher” to a certain extent?

When you say “admissions” do you mean to IUB and/or to Kelley school of business? They are two very separate processes/requirements.

You are probably a lock to get accepted to IUB. Your SAT is probably easily in the top 5%. That your school does not weight gpa may hurt you for scholarships that are administered by the Office of Admissions. No one can say how the office of admissions will “interpret” your gpa for admissions (you are a lock to get in anyway) and awarding of scholarships (you will be competing with hundreds of students with 4.0+ gpa’s written on their applications, which probably will not help you). The admissions office converts all gpa’s to the 4-point scale; but your’s has won’t need converting; it just isn’t weighted. Your school is not doing you and your classmates any favors by not weighting gpas, since you will constantly be competing for admission and scholarships to many universities against students whose schools do weight gpa’s.

Kelley requires 3.7 gpa and 1270 SAT or 30 ACT. You won’t be admitted automatically to Kelley; you will have to petition after you have been accepted to IUB. Apply early to IUB (in August 2014), and petition to Kelley soon after receiving word of admission to IUB. The earlier you get accepted to IUB and petition Kelley for direct admission to the business school, the more likely your petition will be accepted. If accepted, this will make you a direct admit, and make you eligible for scholarships eligible to Kelley direct admits.

Be sure to declare yourself a business major on the IUB application; otherwise, the admissions office will not send any of your information to Kelley.

Hey bthomp1, thanks for the information.

A few questions:
- Is the petition done on a rolling basis or would I have to wait until February? It would seem stressful to wait longer for a decision.
- Would it be safe to assume that direct admits initially are from a computerized database with a cutoff?
- How do high schools usually weight averages? For example for AP courses.

Thank you.

My grade is out of a 100 scale… how would IU convert it to a 4.0?
