High School GPA

What is the lowest GPA that a competitive applicant to CalTech should have? (in general) thx for any replies!

Dunno. How high can you count?

No cutoffs. Too many B's without an excellent explanation in important classes will get you kicked. Math and science are important. Too many is generally more than zero, sometimes more than one.

Thanks for the information.

I happen to have Bs in easy math classes, but As in the more advanced math classes. I guess that means I probably won't be admitted. :(

icymoon -- don't despair. Getting high grades in more advanced math classes (an upward trend) can be viewed as an "explanation" or an erasure of lower grades earlier. To take an extreme example, I don't care how you did in high school geometry if you're now getting A+'s in algebraic topology in college courses. (Exaggerated, but you get the idea).

We'd probably infer that you were (like all of us) deeply bored in easy math classes and then got motivated and did very well later. Just as long as the upward trend is consistent.

So, one again, don't despair. If your application is good you'll be getting the happy envelope. The one-or-two-B's in important math or science courses being a bad sign is just a rough guideline -- every application is different.

Thanks for the helpful information! :D
