I just have a question for the parents. What do you think is too much or too little as a high school graduation gift?

To my way of thinking, it really depends on how well you know the student and how close you are.

are you asking what you might (as a peer) give a friend as a gift, or what you (as parents) give, or what you might be expecting from your parents as a gift.?..
my personal (probably cheap) current value is: family friend/kid's friend gift is a gift card to a useful site (Target, Barnes and Noble, Linensandthings) for $25 - 50 depending on how well we know the kid. Closer relations get more like $75 or $100.
Our family has kind of closed ranks and set limits on niece/nephew/etc gifts, which helps in the short run, but will really mess up the last few in the generation.... $500 in 1985 does not equal $500 in 2011. But I'm not going to be the one to bring this up with my dear MIL .

We generally give a $50 gift card to the bookstore of the college they will be attending.
