Hey, quick question: the application specifies that you should have “at least two” recommendations. That means I can send three, right?

Applications in by march 15th? Welp better get started… At least I have rec letters and transcripts already, but those essays…

Edit: @StudiousMaximus, I am guessing so, though you may want to call the university people up to make sure. I’m guessing if you submit more than 2, they want the third to be somebody other than a teacher, like a former mentor or something.

Does having prior independent science research experience help you or hurt you in the selection process?

just sent in my app :)

How long should our reading lists be?

@4beardolls: I personally had no experience; I know a number of people who did have experience and a number who didn’t. I’d say that it probably helps, but it’s not a HUGE factor; it’s much more important you really show an appreciation and affinity for science than anything.

@kooshbag: There’s not really a set length; if I recall mine was atrociously short. Reading list is something you really don’t have much control over; you just write down everything you’ve read and send it in. I think I’d read like 4 or 5 books.

Haven’t started my app…

It says on the first page of the announcement that the app should be received by march 15th, but on the bottom it says postmarked by march 15th. uh… what? I am also applying to SSP and Ross, but this is definitely my first choice, as I have never done research before!

But from the application form, it also says to e-mail it to blah blah blah (2 e-mails)

@stressedasian152, thanks for your reply.

Mailing my application tomorrow. About the dates - I am no expert, but my GUESS is that they want emails by the 15th, or mailed out by 15th. Receipt by email or postmarked by snail mail, I guess

I sent out the recs and transcript today, and I’ll be emailing the rest Friday night. I just (mostly) finished the first essay. Just one to go!

Anyone have tips for the book essay? I’m kind of blanking

Thinking about writing about Les Mis

Yeah. the book essay was the one that was sort of hard. It didn’t come as easy as i thought it would. Not that anything should be taken lightly… Anyways… Time to move on!
Good luck to all!

Emailing /everything/ haha.
Finished both essays today… Surprisingly, the book essay came a lot more easily than I thought it would; cranked it out in less than an hour. Revising both essays tomorrow and then sending them out with all of my hopes and dreams.
Good luck, everyone!!

I finished it at 4 am… my creative juices flow at random times. I’m pretty sure I had tunnel vision when I was writing it haha

Has anyone received an e-mail confirmation after submitted the application via e-mail?

Just a note for those who are applying:

Last year, Dr. Richmond took a couple weeks to send confirmation e-mails (I got mine in April), so don’t worry if you don’t get one.

Acceptances were sent out over a two or three-week period, so don’t worry when you see acceptances here on cc but haven’t heard anything yet.

Also, HSHSP is awesome. Just saying.

I still haven’t started on the book essay… Whoops.

^Umm, it’s kinda due today…
