High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

i just recounted my list and i have 33 novels, 4 magazines, 4 math problems books, and 5 textbooks i'm using to self study. i swear i've read all of these this year. =P

Be yourself. They should naturally assume you're telling the truth, and are just a great reader. Why dullen yourself for authenticity?

I'm not applying since I'll basically have no $$$ this summer to spend on summer programs o_o;; And I definitely wouldn't qualify for Financial Aid. Sounds terrific though...good luck all.

(Heh, although good luck all = good luck nobody)

it seems appropriate to bump this thread on pi day. There's still time to apply!

I wonder if this year's decisions have been released, yet.

Btw, I totally wanted a math/physics project, but the biology ones were just better.

Oh, as for regular decisions:

Check this out (more pluggage, you'll have to excuse me, Judy, haha) -

10 MIT (or is it 11?)... I've lost count. That's a pretty good percentage, I'd say.

Also, a fair warning. If you are not already an insomniac, this program will certainly contribute a fair amount. (That was to counter the shameless plug.)

Nah, no decisions yet, postmark deadline is april 1 :P

Oh uh, there were 27 of us so...yeah lots of people got into MIT(w00t MIT w00t), and not everyone applied. Also I think it really helped me get an internship thingy at Jackson Labs this summer. See, I'm doing genetics again even though I didn't think I wanted a genetics project! Really, all the research projects are interesting enough that if you learn enough about them, you'll get really into them.

Oh yeah I feel like I've plugged shamelessly for too long. Uh...bad things...the band camp kept on breaking the elevator in our dorm? Oh, make sure you don't decide to take the last bus after laser tagging, then have it not show up which results in you jogging 7 miles back to campus. That was still kind of fun :D Yeah, that's about it...

hey, i got an email saying i got in...how selective is this? ANd i wrong a lot about how i love math, but i doubt i will be smart enough to do math projects...

should i go to this instead of SSP or WTP? :D

narcissa, did you send your application at the deadline or earlier? i sent mine in right at the deadline and I just got an email confirming that they received my application (it didn't say anything about getting in). did anyone else get an acceptance letter already?

Wait, results were released today? I never even got a confirmation email that they received my application.

I got an e-mail saying I have alternate status, and I turned my application in right at the deadline. Does anyone know what the chances I'll actually make it in?

I send mine in like two months before the deadline LOL

how many ppl apply? is this prestigious

lei: i think they have like 5 alternates each year or something

I applied to other places too, but resume-wise, I'm stronger in english/history than science, and they're all super-prestigious/selective, so I doubt I'm getting in.

ugh can anyone tell me how selective this is :P
like, do many ppl apply? it seems like an obscure program

It said on the brochure that 24 people are selected and last year they had a 17% acceptance rate, so I'm guessing around 150 people applied (assuming the numbers stay constant)

are the ppl who apply more self-selective than, say, SSP

Also, if i've NEVER done research before, would the 7 weeks of research here be enough for competitions? Can I continue my research after the program even though I'm like 2000 miles from Michigan?

I think a lot of people who applied here probably also applied somewhere else. SSP is more well known, but there's also a classroom element. The acceptance for SSP is 35%, but the figures can be misleading because of how self-selective the pool is

Does anyone know if rejection letters are sent out by e-mail or by regular mail?

Narcissa, I wouldn't worry so much about prestige. This program is amazing. I went in with no research experience whatsoever and had a great time. You get lots of freedom and the students there are very smart. The relationships you develop with everyone is the best part. I still keep in touch with everyone, so I know about their college acceptances. Here's the acceptances:
MIT (half the people got in and are going), Caltech, Dartmouth (me!), Cornell, Brown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Wharton UPenn, Stanford, Notre Dame, UChicago, Olin, Carnegie Mellon, RPI, Wesleyan, Georgetown, UMich and any good school imaginable.
If that's not prestigious enough for you, then go to SSP. I'm so proud of everyone though. tear

hmm thnx. i shall see =) is that all from ur year? wow thats pretty cool. how many sophmores went?

yup, I went the summer of '07, and we were all rising seniors.

I just got my acceptance email today, and I think I'm going to go! :)
