High School Internships

I’m currently a junior living in So-Cal. Is there any humanities internships open for high schoolers?

“Humanities” is kind of broad. What types of subjects interest you?

@“Snowball City” first option: journalism, history, law; Second Option: english and business

Do you have any Historical Societies near you or historic homes? Quirky museums that could use use a good brain? In my limited experience that type of location is grateful for help and may let you design a project.

@“Snowball City” ohhhh right I"ll look into them! good idea.

I would also suggest starting a bookmark folder on your computer where you can gather websites that will be useful in the future. That is how I gathered much of the information I have posted in other threads. If I read a newspaper article or a National Geographic article that was interesting I searched for either the author or universities mentioned.

I also googled various locations with a general term such as " Nantucket aquarium internship" which led me to its aquarium but also additional internships. This one is for a historic home. https://www.mariamitchell.org/get-involved/internships/mitchell-house Save this info for when you are in college and looking for summer employment. You can also read what kind of qualifications and experience is needed so that you can build up your skills and be the perfect candidate.

Play the long game. Start this summer with something like a historical house. Then move on to a historical society. At both places see if you can write a short piece for their newsletters or assist with any day camps. Does your school offer CPR? Find out if there is any preferred software used for data collection in that field.

By the end of your sophomore year in college you will have a solid resume.

Ask your family if you could attend https://apps.carleton.edu/summer/humanities/ the summer after your 10th or 11th grade. Financial aid is available.

@“Snowball City” Thank you so much! wow I gotta start doing this now

Another thought:

I have seen several internships where a preferred skill is ability to manage social media. My sister does the social media accounts for a restaurant her husband owns. She has some kind of platform that lets her preload posts that then post to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (I think) on the correct day.

Think of social media as micro journalism. How do you convey information of a certain depth in very few words? For example, you pick up your Grandmother at the airport. Instead of just a photo of her with her luggage, create information such as “My Grandma is a time capsule. In her life she has traveled by ocean liner, roads before interstates, trains, propellors, and now hops on a jet as though it is a bus.” (Weak I Know) It gives a way to think about her other than “Oh they are going to be so happy to see her”

Could your family manage airfare and registration to this? http://mediaschool.ohio.edu/hsmw#

I’ve looked for some camps that I can apply to, and I’ve found a lot of interesting camps that I can apply to, like Princeton’s journalism camp. I’m also going to apply to an internship program for Congresswoman Mimi Walters, so hopefully I get in! Thank you so much for your advice! I’m going to start sending emails to local museums now
