Hey guys, i just got accepted to a summer program called COSMOS. I was not given financial aid, so i need to find a job just to ease the burden on my parents. What is a recommended part time job for a 16 year old? Should i just try for a grocery/drug store or would any tutoring place take me? I have a 2290 SAT and other academic qualifications, I was just wondering if there is an age minimum/ required credential for such a job.

For some jobs, like most grocery stores, the age minimum is just 16. Some other places have 18 as the minimum. If you don’t have previous job experience it might be difficult to get a job for a competitive position/store.

A grocery store type place is definitely an option. You could do tutoring, but your best chance there would be freelance tutoring, not through an organization. You’d get paid more an hour doing tutoring than working at minimum wage for a store. Also, you wouldn’t need to tutor solely for SAT, but could also tutor non highschoolers in subjects that you’re good at (math, sciences, english, history…).

Ya that’s what i was thinking. I guess I’ll talk to the local middle schools to see if they can help spread the word. I do a bit of freelance tutoring but only with one client so far because junior year has been killing me schedule wise

Be careful how much you take on, first semester senior year was way more stressful than junior year for me. If you’re planning on working, you might not want to do it during the first part of senior year.

Talk to teachers too. Your old middle school teachers can recommend you to students who need help.

Ya that’s a good idea, i still know some of them pretty well. I am actually taking 6 AP’s senior year so Im gonna try to find some tutoring after AP tests and help kids with their finals. I wont continue next year though
