High School Junior - Will I get in?

Hi! First off, I'd just like to say hello to everyone; I've been wandering around this forum for a little while now, and I've found everyone's opinions to be really helpful while I toured various universities in search of the one that would best suit me! I think I've narrowed it down to two: FSU and UF. Right now, I'm leaning very heavily towards UF - but I have serious concerns as to whether or not I'd be able to get in. Here are my stats - do you think I have what it takes? Thanks so much in advance!

PROFILE
White female, h/s Junior at #1 rated high school in Seminole County. All A's and B's, all Honors and AP. I have had no relatives attend any state universities, so I don't apply for any legacy stuff. (does UF consider legacy?)

NUMBERS
3.7 unweighted Florida GPA; 4.0 Florida weighted. I think when I subtract all the electives, I end up with a 4.2 UF and FSU weighted GPA, which is what goes on the applications, yes?
2010 SAT/ retaking, because I know I could do much better on the writing. I ran out of room, and ended up smooshing my two concluding paragraphs into like, a two-line space.

HOLISTICS
--News Editor of a Columbia Scholastic Press Association gold-crown winning, FloridaSPA-merited student publication for two years, staff reporter for one. Proficient in computer skills, design interfaces, and story composition.
--Member of: NHS, Spanish Honors Society, Epsilon Nu Gamma, Beta Club, and a few other smaller clubs that I don't really participate in.
--Vice President of my school's National Quill and Scroll Society chapter
--Has held same job for a year at a local florist, and absolutely loves working!
--55 hours community service at a local hospital, working at the Nurses' station answering phonecalls from patients and taking appropriate action. (calling a nurse, tech, doctor, or seeing to the patient's most basic needs myself)
--Babysits about 4 hours a week, and tutors for about one. I got my first babysitting job at age 11, and have been the neighborhood stand-in mom ever since!
--Took 5 total years of Spanish classes, and would probably fall under the catagory of "semi-fluent". Has a huge interest in the Spanish culture, despite not having a drop of Spanish blood!

Whew. And that's it. So, be honest. Do you think I can make it? I feel like my application is going to look really bare...

Thanks!
-Tori

welcome

and

class rank?

what are your math/reading sat scores?

If you don’t get in I will be shocked. As for tuition you might want to check this out if you are in state.

^ud be shocked if u see some of the stellar people that got rejected this year…trust me, ive seen better kids get rejected

no offense to the TS

gpowsang

srry double post

i got in with much much worse.

^that doesnt mean the TS is a shoe-in

there have been various applicants this year with high scores and amazing ECs and CSs that didnt get it

OP could definitely use more community service hours.
all my stats were worse, but i had 150+ hours.

I disagree. Does UF even consider community service anymore considering Bright Futures requires 75? It’s quite obvious that most people do it to look good on a college application.

I would say you have a really good chance. Although Florida has gotten very difficult to get into, you have the only key things that matter.

For one, you are a instate applicant. Most of the stories you hear of people with fantastic scores getting deferred are OOS. You also have a solid GPA and SAT scores, both above the average. Lastly, you have pretty good, though not amazing, EC’s that don’t detract from your overall application.

You are going to be fine. I would recommend getting 75 community service hours so you can get 100% bright futures.

realllyyyy good chance; pretty much guaranteed.

you have a good shot?

what school do you go to in seminole county?
i only ask cause i’m in the same county (:

Thanks for all the input, everyone! Yeah, I’d heard lots of stories about people with much better test scores getting rejected, but I didn’t even consider that they may have been out of state!
I’ll definitely want to add some more to my TS this June, though, when I retake, and I’ll try to add some more community service. I have 100 hours for Bright Futures 100%, but 25 of my hours were affiliated with my newspaper, and I thought it would be redundant to restate that, you know? But maybe I’ll smoosh some more in between now and July, just to flesh it out a little bit.

And my class rank isn’t so hot; I’m just outside of the top 10% mark by like, half a percent. Haha, so maybe that will change next year, if I get enough A’s in AP courses… ;)

And to GregB - Lions, baby! We’ll be making a comeback next year.

I’m a junior also applying to UF next year, but I just wanted to say that the reason that community service looks awesome on applications is because it shows that you have dedication outside of what is required. If you go above and beyond the required 75 hours (especially in something related to your possible career choice) it demonstrates the extra measures you’ll be willing to take in your education at UF. :)

(I heard this from a Cornell admissions officer, I’m going to assume it’s the same at UF. Most schools look at the same things, regardless of standing.)

^qft

having ~75 hours just tells admissions that you only worked so you could get money for college.

If you really want to let ut CS stand out, make it the topic of your essay, or about it.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/82799-how-impress-adcoms-your-extracurriculars.html</a></p>

That expands upon what I am trying to say.

Also, as said before, 75 is noting these days. I got in with about 1,100 hours. (1/3 of which came from a missionary trip)

gpowsang

Ahhh hahahaha, dont want to seem like a punk but i have 1,500 :[. But i dont think that they care that much about community service, lol, the jokes on me (my counelor could have told me that before). Only thing to do now is try to get as many credits onto your belt, they seem to really like that, id say about 26.

And to GregB - Lions, baby! We’ll be making a comeback next year.

I too am in Seminole County, and I can easily say Oviedo is not near the best school in the county. They are probably on par w/ Lyman and Seminole, and not even close to the level of Springs and Brantley.

;) Hey now, let’s not get into a debate with that. I’m only going by AP pass rates and FCATs. Seminole has the IB program, so I can definitely give you that - but Springs?

Hmmm now I’m very worried about the community service thing. I just don’t have that many hours, and I have very little time to get in more. Hmmmm…
