Does the fact that only 60% of graduating seniors at my high school attend four-year colleges and universities help or hurt in admissions?

does that number go on your transcript and get sent to schools?

doesn't this go on your school's profile sheet? I know my school sends info like this on a sheet with other stats to all schools that a senior applies to...

if you did really well on standardized tests, it helps because it shows you probably went above what your education requires. However, if your strongest strength is your grades, it may look suspicious.

it'll probably help counteract low sATs.

Yeah it does go on my profile sheet which is attached to my transcripts. It shows school data such as the number of students, percentage of minorities, mean SAT scores for last years graduating class, grad rate etc. Thanks for your replies!

So i'm assuming the fact that 100% of students from my school go onto 4 year colleges will hurt me. Crap.

It's not like it's something you can do anything about.

Also, they accept many, many kids from prep schools where 100% of students go onto four year colleges.

believe it or not, my school is public and 98% of the students go on to 4 year colleges, 1% to vocational or 2 year schools, and 1% don't go on (from a class of about 350-400 each year). I think that is an impressive stat.

I'm not sure whether school profiles are all that helpful. I asked for a copy of one and (at least the one from my school) is pretty much propaganda trying to make my school look a lot better. My school is sort of a weird mix of affluent areas and poorer neighborhoods (it's approx. 42% black, 46% white, and 12% other minorities), which tends to polarize the academic field. My grade has about 500 kids and only 383 are ranked. Probably only 15-20% actually take any honors classes and the number who are actually in them regularly is probably closer to 10%. I'd guess 5% take AP clases. The average SAT score is 1020ish. Now, if you've done well at my school, you look really good in comparison to the norm. But they don't put that stuff in the profile. They put the average SAT score overall and the average SAT score of the honors kids (1330ish). They don't say how many students take honors and AP classes, but list the classes offered. So, my school's profile feels really inaccurate. I'm not sure how that'll affect my admission chances though.

My High School was ranked #1 here http://www.njmonthly.com/issues/Sept04/chart.html , though later booted down to #3 due to some oversight by the magazine. The site gives some nice statistical breakdowns of my Highschool and other NJ high schools.

T - you go to Tenafly? No way.

Edit: that was stupid. nevermind.

Yeah, I dunno how good it is to divulge specifics, but it's nice to know that some random magazine liked my school.

Yea, i think at my school about 40% go to county college and around 40-45% go to 4 yr colleges. I think the average SAT is like 1010 or something.

I don't believe your high school helps you or hurts you. Admissions officers get paid to be sophisticated about the different kiinds of secondary schools out there, and to evaluate applicants in that context.

I know from books etc. that the colleges each have their own little book on each of the schools where most of the applicants come from. And they rank each school, and how each school grades, because there isn't much parity between the thousands of schools. A school like mine, where 100% of kids attend 4-year institutions has good standing with colleges, because they know its rigorous. Like we only had i think 6 kids out of 110 to get over a 4.0 wieghted. Whereas some schools have like the five-point scale.

So i dont think it will hurt you at all, the adcom will probably know about your school, and if not, do some research on it. Don't worry, be happy :)

At my school, only 40-something percent of graduating seniors go on to college. Our average SAT is above state average, well, because only nine people took it last year.

Oh, and there's no way the adcom knows about my school. The last time anyone was accepted into an Ivy was 25+ years ago, and that person didn't go to Yale.

I'm really hoping this helps me...

Without the school profile, no one at my school would have any hope. So I'd say its helpful.
