High School Sophomore Schedule

Hi, I’m a current freshman and am in the process of selecting courses for next year. I need some feedback on these classes I plan on taking. Will my schedule be too stressful to manage with extracurriculars? How hard are the classes?

  1. AP Euro
  2. Advanced Language Arts (10th grade honors lang arts curriculum with a side yearlong individual research project)
  3. AP Physics 1
  4. Honors Chemistry
  5. AP Calc AB* (I'm planning on taking a test at the end of summer to skip precalc)
  6. Newspaper (It's a class at my school)
  7. Spanish 3

*I’m having a hard time deciding if I should take AP Calc AB or BC. Taking BC would save me time by not having to split calc over 2 years, but will it be too hard to take as a sophomore? I’m pretty good at math, but I’m definitely not a math whiz. I currently have a 94 in Alg2/Trig.

Please give me feedback; I really want to make sure I’m making the right decisions. Thank you!

If your going to skip pre-calc, then I would recommend taking Calc AB over Calc BC. Calculus is quite a different course than previous math classes, so how well you do could go either way, but going straight to BC might be too challenging. Plus your schedule is rigorous enough with 2 other APs.

If you’re scared of taking AP Calc BC as a sophomore then why don’t you take Honors Precalc next year and then take AP Calc BC as a junior. Colleges don’t expect you to skip math courses and the end result would be the same as taking AP Calc AB as sophomore.

I wouldn’t recommend skipping Pre Calc unless your school offers courses passed AP Calc BC because I heard colleges dont like students exceeding what their school has.

Thanks you for the responses! I agree that skipping Precalc and taking AP Calc AB wouldn’t be worth it. I think I will try to skip Precalc, and if I pass the test, that’ll give me the confidence I need to take BC.
