This is probably somewhere already, but I've looked and can't find it. I am not good at sports, and I never have been. I intend to go to one of the Ivy Leagues though, preferabbly Harvard or Yale. Do I have to do some form of sport to get into a college like Harvard? I am a straight-A student, valedictorian of my eighth grade class, going into freshmen year. I also am very invloved in drama programs and band. If you could help me with this that would be great. I just want to make all the right decsions I can.
Thanks.

dont be an EC whore. do what you like, not what will help you get into college. if you follow your passions, it's gonna get reflected no matter what. Hrvard doesn't want fakes.

you know, i constantly find myself telling freshmen... "dont do everything you do in high school just to get into that harvard or yale. do things because you love them, and to make yourself a better person. what if you dont get into harvard or yale, you've just wasted four of the best years of your life." so my point is, do what you love. do what you enjoy. and do what will make you a better person. i mean, recreational sports is definitely something thats good for you, but dont push yourself to do competitive sports if it'll make you miserable.

Yeah seriuosly, don't have Harvard be your dream if you're only going there because of the name. There's enough of those out there. Just try to get involved in as many things...clubs.. it doesnt have to be sports... oh and do a bunch of volunteering! as possible and take a bunch of IB or AP classes and you'll be fine. I used to want to go to Harvard (since I knew about it) but now I realize that it's not at all a place that I would be want to go even if I could go for free. Ew. I guess it just takes time to realize what you really want and as a freshman, I'm not quite sure that you know what that is yet. But yeat, explore your options, get involved in as much as possible, and you'll be good to go;; like a crunchwrap supreme from Taco Bell :]]

im not sure sports will matter a ton unless ur like a professional, or will win awards...i know that i, for one, am not at all gifted athletically (my whole eye-hand coordination sucks!) so i'll go concentrate on somewhere else.

You can start some sports in high school and end up being pretty good at them. Some are easier to pick up than others and can sometimes require more hard work than natural athleticism to suceed.

Fall: Football (kind of), Cross-country
Winter: Indoor Track, Wrestling
Spring: Crew, Outdoor Track, Lacrosse (kind of)

If you focus on the activities that you love, and devote all your time and energy and strive to excel in them, come application time you'll look back and have a very impressive Extracurricular resume. That is the beauty of doing activities that you WANT to do instead of trying to please Adcoms; you end up pleasing adcoms by pursuing your passions.

Drama and band are both very worthwhile ECs that take a considerable amount of time/skill/effort. Don't worry about sports unless you truly want to do them.

As another piece of advice, don't return to this site until your junior year. It will only make you more stressed out and force you to focus too much on the big picture, when in reality you just need to take it one day/class/test/play/performance at a time.

hahaa. i started laughing like crazy when i read that you were the valevictorian of your 8th grade. . like that`s good and all.. but i thought you were like older to be thinking about EC's and stuff.

but i
m going into the 9th grade, too.. so, i guess i really shouldn
t judge. . haha. Definetly not valevictorian for me.. so, yeah, keep up your smartness

I only mentioned the valedictorian thing to show I'm really "academically" involved... lol (I don't have any SAT stuff yet)... anyways, thanks for your responses to my question... I really, really hate sports with a passion and was afraid that I would have to do one of some sort..... thanks
