Sports: Really Necessary?

So I'm going into my sophomore year, and I haven't taken a sport. Also, I don't plan on taking one either. Is this ok for college?

If you've got lots else going on, it's OK. One kid from my S's HS who's heading to an Ivy didn't do a sport, but he was majorly involved in our HS's theater program -- like 30 hours a week. The fact that he didn't do a sport wasn't held against him.

Most people do something sports-wise, though, even if it's not competitive -- eg, ski or sail on their own, or play golf, or even weekend tennis. You don't have to belong to a varsity team.

Ok, thanks! Yes, I have other Ec's. I also take part in yoga outside of school.

I don't think a sport could hurt your admissions chances, unless they negatively impact your grades or something of that nature.

Even if you're not very athletic, but you think you can fit it in your schedule, you should perhaps look into joining a team. It's a great way to make some good friends.

Out of the 28 people we're sending to Ivies this year, probably 3 played sports. I didnt play sports. Didnt matter.

Its not necessary if you don't want to... Don't tryout if the specific sport is not your passion. Cause you will be doing it everyday for 2+ hours afterschool, tournaments, etc. If however it is your passion, it will only benefit you.

Alright, thanks for all the advice guys!

I don't have a big passion for sports. I'm more of a science person, so it's great to knbow I don't need one.

it wont hurt you, but you should try some sports just for fun and see if you like them..being able to play a sport is a great thing to have..it gets you so many connections

Well we are sending two students to Stanford, both played Sports, but they also accelerated everywhere else. Sports are something that you shouldn't join just to list on a college app, do it for passion.

I play soccer but my school doesn't allow Juniors to play on JV and though I can get on varsity b/c of seniority I know I wouldn't have any playing time so I don't really want to play next year...I feel like three to five hours after school everyday+Sat would be better spent actually DOING something. Hopefully this won't hurt my apps too much.

Well, I don't think it will hurt you, but if you have time for it, you should join a sport.
At first, I never played a sport in my life. But then, I decided to try a few. And now, I love to play soccer, swim, and run track for varsity and I made many new friends.

not everyone has the physical capacity to play sports in high school, so no

Participate in activites that you love and are capable of doing. If sports is not for you, then don't do sports. Very simple

Some sports are painful; but their labour,
Delight in them sets off.

Yeah, I'm not going to take a sport. Now I just wish I didn't have to take PE. I need 2 years of it but I don't see where I could fit it in..

you don't need sports to get in. as long as ou have other ECs you'll be completely fine.

what has the world come to that you need to play competitive sports in order to succeed academically? sbpardj?

I was wondering because I know of people that do sports, tough classes, ASB, volunteer, etc, etc, and I just wonder how they do it.

playing sports HELPED me academically.. making me more focused, etc. and i volunteer also.. its good being active and busy

"I was wondering because I know of people that do sports, tough classes, ASB, volunteer, etc, etc, and I just wonder how they do it."

they are better than you at managing their time, or maybe things just come easier to them so they don't need to study as much

some people are just better than everyone else at certain things, and that sucks but you have to live with it
