Okay, so I'm set for my academics. But I'm worried about my extracurricular activities (sports). And I'm trying to aim for a good college.
So I joined my school's Girl's track team last year as a freshman. This year (fall season) I was in my High school's JV Golf team.
Now, I heard that it is good to participate in the same sport consistently.
HOWEVER. I dread sports. I hate it. I'm not trying to sound like those girls who don't even try out different sports, and start complaining. I try so hard... >_<
I really suck at running... and golf too...and basically everything else. Last year I got in LAST PLACE every time we had a meet or a scrimmage. Quite embarrassing...I tried SO hard too.

So my question is, Is it worth it to join track again this season, even if I'm terrible and DO NOT ENJOY it?

There really isn't any sport I like...so....I don't really have an option here do I? :p

Scholarly:
Well there is one guy on the track team who isn’t very promising. He gets last in nearly every race;in fact, his times are worse than some of the girls. However, for some reason, he still wants to run, and he enjoys it.

Though, I have seen the coach attempt to talk to him, nobody knew what he was saying, but it did seem as if he wanted to get him to quit (highly unlikely, however).

What I’m saying is… it isn’t bad to play sports to get extra curriculars, but at the same time, it makes you seem like you don’t have any joy or pride for the sport. It isn’t like someone can’t see your times on [US National Portal - MileSplit United States](http://milesplit.com). Most decent athletes get an award, even if it is a honorable mention etc.

Most people don’t do sports because it looks good on a college application… lol. Just funnel your time and energy into something else that you enjoy more than sports.

@ColumbianX- I highly appreciate your opinion. However, your second comment was unnecessary, considering that you do not actually know my real personality to judge. But thanks anyways. @Rhebar- Haha, okay thanks for your reply. I’m just trying to do the best I can in high school, so I won’t regret it later on if I just happen to not get in the school I like just because of my lack of extracurriculars :3

1) I’ve heard that the boost to apps that athletic ECs give you are very modest unless you are decent at the sport.

2) It takes up a lot of time. You say you want to do sports to boost your app, but unless you are good at it, it’s doing more harm than good when you look at the opportunity cost, for example. I probably spend 10-15 hours a week doing them throughout the entire year (I play 3 sports, so it’d be slightly less for you). If I were to spend all that time doing something else, I could easily have enough time for 3 or 4 clubs, or a whopping 500+ volunteer hours a week.

3) You are not having fun!!!

I think the answer is quite obviously no! If you had fun with it, I would say it would be worth if even if it were a little bit detrimental to your apps, but the combination of not having fun and the time it takes up is just not worth it.

I’m an ancient parent and this is the advice I share with my kids when we have discussions like this.

Are you having fun? do you find this fulfilling? If the answer is no you realize there are about a million other things you can try to see if you find them more fulfilling/fun … and you know we’ll support you in whatever you want to try.

Finally, don’t worry about doing things because you believe they will look good to a college or not … just keep yourself busy doing things you find interesting … and the college thing will work out fine.

I felt the same way. I used to love soccer and played in middle school, but I got injured, and I didn’t like my teammates, my coach, or the competition. I tried track, and I was awful and didn’t like it. So instead of wasting my time and the time of my coaches, I decided to try a lot of other things. I got involved in local politics, founded a club devoted to integrating city youth and city council, joined the quiz bowl team, and acted in the school play. There are plenty of opportunities that are out there, at least one of which will suit you better, and colleges will appreciate you doing something you’re passionate about, rather than doing something (and generally sucking at it) that you don’t like. Try knitting, try getting a job, try tap-dancing, try anything and everything until you find something that you genuinely like and want to devote time to doing. There’s a lottt more to extracurriculars than sports, and the best colleges really couldn’t care less if you’re an athlete unless you’re the best of the best. Have you tried painting? Have you tried poetry? Get out there and do things that you want to do; that way, even if you aren’t good at it, you’ll at least be enjoying yourself.

Find something else besides sports to fill your time with.

Like others have said, so many other people do sports that they don’t matter much on an app unless you’re decent at the sport or have a leadership position in the sport you are doing.

Do other, less time-consuming things that you actually enjoy. There are lots of things out there waiting for you to get involved in them.

Wow, where did you get your time turner!?
