At my school it IS conditional to teacher approval.

The teacher cannot prevent any given parent from gaining access, and the child of that parent can't prevent it either. It doesn't sound like it's conditional on approval from either of the parties who most directly bear the cost of the new system. The teacher can only "passively resist" by declining to use the online gradebook. The student is powerless altogether.

What is the definition for "helicopter parent" ? I know them when I see them, but everyone has an idea about this. I'd love to hear what teachers and staff say about this.
I saw an article in the NYT about parents who go to college with their kids and select the classes and write the papers (on line). There was even a story about colleges having staff and older college students stoping parents from going to orientation with their students. I think this is where the "parents orientation" started. I certainly don't remember my parents going to any parent orientation. What do you think?
