High Schooler In Need of College Advice

I'm relatively new to the college scene, so I would like to know what kinds of colleges I would have a decent chance of getting into based on my qualifications that I have now. I'm really not aware of colleges and how admissions, etc, really works, except for a bit of basic knowledge on things such as out of state, in state, etc. So, if anyone could take a look at my qualifications, and tell me where I'd be able to get in, that'd be great.

I'm interested in majoring in either Buisiness or Engineering, or a possible double major in both.

I am currently a high school sophomore.

I am ranked 14, out of 942 students at my high school. I attend a high school in Plano Independent School District, which is located in Plano, Texas. I'm not really sure about my GPA unweighted, but I've got an AP course under my belt, since in Plano, we are restricted from taking more than 1 AP course till Junior/Senior Year.

I plan on attending the Texas Academy of Math and Science next year, in which I will be taking various business electives to supplement the science part (it's a post education program at UNT - does fairly well - as a student this year there won the Simens competition). I'll be able to rack up college credits here that would surpass the normal amount of credits one would accumulate by just taking AP courses.

I had to take an SAT as it was required for my application for TAMS - so here's what I got.

Math - 700
Reading - 790
Writing - 730

Essay: 12

I've got some decent extra curriculars. I'm most proficient in Speech and Debate - I participate in two events, Extemporaneous Speaking and Congressional Debate, and have done well in both, winning at many tournaments. I am also an alternate for the National Forensics Debate Tournament for Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking (2009).

Other extra curriculars include FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Quiz Bowl, Junior World Affairs Council, and National Honors Society.

I participate in community service with my youth-group at my temple. I am the Vice President of our Debate Team, and the Secretary of our National Honors Society.

I'm also East Indian (Asian), if race really has any significant impact.

Financial aid isn't TOO big of a deal, since my parents have been saving for a while, and they can afford most colleges.

I hope I included at least some information so I can receive some decent advice. Thanks!

Just to let you know, at many schools, it would be extremely difficult to double major across schools if one of your majors is Engineering. At some top schools, the same would be said of business.

Well then, can someone tell me my options for either one?

My parents aren’t extremely involved, and even after a bit of research, I don’t have an actual bias on how which colleges accept whom, and how basic admissions works, and what’s important.

I’m just asking for the rough semantics of the admissions process because I’m a bit ignorant about the process as a whole. If someone whose been through this, or has done this, can explain how it works, and then show what I’d match up to, that would be great!

Thanks, hope for a response, applicannot, thanks again for pointing it out, I’ve just heard that double majors in both have been done before. Thanks for your input though!

Id say u have a great transcript. Just keep up the good work. I am also a sophomore looking into business for a potential career as an investment banker. Ur SAT score is excellent for our age. I’d just say raise it to 2300 and maybe take the ACTs too.

You can start by figuring out which universities (there won’t be any colleges) have both undergraduate business and engineering. It won’t be that many. Michigan, Wisconsin, UPenn, …

Hmm, okay, sounds like a plan! Does anyone know how colleges select people. I’ve been reading up, but I’ve been encountering all these new terms like “hooks” and “legacies”. How important are these, but first of all what are they, and do I need them necessarily?

lehigh and clarkson are 2 places that have engineering and business.clarkson also has an early admit as a high school senior program
