High Schoolers Getting Journalism Internships?

Is it unheard of? I don't have any connections, as far as I know. I live in the Tri-State area.

*How do I make it clear that I don’t necessarily need money? Because a few have told me they only take college students…

I have heard of a few at very local newspapers; maybe check with those?

Yes, but they say they only take 2 college students. Why won’t they take me… I’m not expecting to be paid. The worst I could do is help out or just sit there and watch…

This girl I know got a journalism internship at a local paper in her town. She had to fight them on the whole not being in college thing. She put together a portfolio of work to demonstrate her writing skills and also had past employers bombard the paper with references. She also called them every so often with different reasons why she would be better than a college student.

After two weeks of begging, they caved and gave her the internship. You should try to show how serious you are and dedicated you will be. If you have worked at other places and have good references then you should have them talk to the people in charge.

Good luck =)
