Hi, I'm new to College Confidential. I am having a hard time choosing between 2 high schools, and I would really appreciate if you all could give me benefits and disadvantages of both. There's

Catholic School
850 students (9-12)
Has Honors Program

and

Public High School
Science and Tech (very advanced classes, even better than the catholic schools)
Lots of friends going there

Thanks!

PS. I don't know if this matters, but I've never been to public school

Um, if the public HS has better classes, and all of your friends going there, and you don't have to pay for it, what would the Catholic HS have to offer you?

public high school. I've only gone to a public high school, so I couldn't really tell you the differences. And if you're not a science/math person, then the catholic school would probably suit you well, but I don't know much about private religous schools.

I'd go with the public school. You mentioned that the Catholic HS has an honors program, however it's also very likely that the public school probably also has an honors program or a similar type. -Have your friends also only been to private schools?

The public school has nearly 3,000 kids. I am actually not catholic, but if you want to continue a religious education through high school, catholic schools are the only way to go around here. Most of my friends went to public elementary schools and went to our private school for middle school. My best friends brother goes to the public high school and he likes it... I think I'm leaning towards that.

Well I would pick the public high school, but heck, it really depends on the quiality of teachers. Some Catholic schools are top notch, but others have SAT test scores lower then their nearby public schools. Unless a Cathlic education and small class size is really important to you, you would probably have a better high school experience at the public school.

Another frequent problem I found in private religious schools around here is that while many public schools don't exactly have great teachers, many high school teachers in private Christian schools don't really know what they are teaching (or the school relies heavily on independent study). Even thoguh the classes may be smaller, the average teacher is often less qualified.

I think that it depends on the Catholic high school. I go to a Catholic high school and think that it has provided me with numerous opportunities that I would not have been able to take advantage of if I had gone to a public high school. I have small classes and I find that the teachers at my school really care about the students. It's kind of a community feeling that you may not be able to find at a school of thousands of students. My school has about 550 students. I attend all honors and AP classes and find them challenging. I've had no problems with the quality of the teachers and have found them to be quite familiar with the material for the most part. I had gone to a Catholic elementary and middle school before high school. I hope this helps :)
