High Test Scores, Low GPA: Do I have a shot at Tulane?

Tulane sent me an email saying that I could apply there free of charge, without having to send them a formal essay or recommendations. And Tulane was one of the schools I was thinking about before I got this email, so now I'm really interested in them.

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.28 (weighted)
PSAT: 191
SAT: 1940
ACT: 29
AP Scores: 4, 2, 2

They're a tough school to get into, I know, but could you guys give your personal opinions on the chance I have at getting into this school?

If I'm leaving any info out that would be relevant to my chances, tell me and I'll respond.

by the name of the thread, i thought ur SAT would be at least 2200

1940, is by no means a high score. its just pretty much low average when going into competitive schools, no offense.

No, I agree a 1940 isn't considered 'high', at least for competitive colleges. I simply meant that my test scores are very high relative to my (horribly) low GPA.

I still have time to take the SAT and ACT multiple times my senior year, and I'm sure I can bring them both up if I study, since I've never prepped for those before.

I just put my current scores up there to be conservative.

Let's now say that after I prep, my SAT is now between 2000-2100.

How good of a shot do I have then?

Honestly, i wouldn't think of your chances as being good by any means...

3.2 weighted? really isn't looking to good... but if you get a 2250+ on your SATS that can change...

and if you take more than two SAT 2's (like 4) some college will look over the gpa... i use that very loosely and i don't mean to imply that good sat 2 scores will undermine your gpa... but it will help a tad....

College Search - Tulane University - At a Glance

Thanks for the link.

I found, as I'm sure you intended, this:

"# 20% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49

20% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

14% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

2% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49"

Which is encouraging. This means that about 40% of their students had a high school GPA lower than or equal to mine.

So if make 2000+ on my SAT I'm taking in October, I should have a reasonable chance, right?

bmup

......

I think you will, if not only because Tulane is hurting for students (I don't know how many they can house, but their yield isn't particularly high according to CollegeBoard 2006-2007). I wouldn't get your hopes up, but like you said, you have a reasonable chance. There's a big degree of separation between an SAT above 2000 and below 2000, so really try to get that up. Make sure you have good essays/recommendations, but know that with these emails Tulane's ulterior motive is to get its name out there as well as increase its selectivity.

I think you have good chances, good luck!
