I'm considering skipping pre-calc and diving into AP Calc AB in order to take BC senior year so I can finish all of math in high school!

How many people have done this? Is taking AP Stats junior year and then Calc AB senior year still acceptable or does that diminish my math "fortitute" (for lack of a better word)?

Are you looking at a STEM major? If so, adjust your schedule to take as much math as you can and get exposed to it. I was weird and took Calc BC and Stats senior year. I would talk with your guidance counselor about skipping pre-calc though. My pre-calc class was awesome because it was an everyday class and we explored trig, probability, and even started calc by the end of the year. But as long as you are challenging yourself with your classes you should be fine.

Pre-calc, at least in my school, is pretty important. I’d talk to your math teacher and your counselor before making this decision. Why not take pre-calc junior year, and skip to BC senior year?

I’ve considered that. Hm, I’m not particularly sure. I’ll see how the self studying pans out, and if I can’t finish it, I’ll retract back to precalc + AP stats junior and then take AP calc AB senior + self study BC requirements! C:

and @Vanamo13: Yes, I’m looking towards a STEM major; and are you speaking from experience as a Columbia student?

No, I’m going to be at Princeton this fall. I lurk in the Columbia forum because that’s where my girlfriend is going.
In regards to self studying for BC, I’d again talk with your calc teacher. BC is basically just AB plus sequences and series, which is a struggle for a lot of students.

At my school junior year I took Honors Trigonometry/Pre-Calc, basically a rushed course. Next year I’ll be taking Calc ABC, which is 1 and 2 put together. It’s harder, I may drop to Calc AB since I’m also taking Stats. My recommendation is take Statistics and Calc 1, don’t kill yourself with math classes!

Well I just wrapped up BC Calc this year, and over the summer I’m taking multivariable at a local university. During the fall of my senior year I’m taking Stat. However, I definitely think that BC was one of the most interesting and challenging courses that I’ve ever taken. My counselor also said that universities look very favorably upon it, so that may be a point to take into consideration when making your decision.

Best of luck

It helps to go to Columbia with a math background, but if you’re planning on being a comparative literature major and absolutely despise math, don’t worry yourself by taking BC. i took AB online (no AP test because I didn’t care enough) and Stats at my school, and I got in fine. I am in CC, and very happily not taking any more calc classes.
