Highschool Ambassador for a Nonprofit

Hi!!

I am a rising sophomore in Northern New Jersey. I am attempting to be an Ambassador for a local nonprofit. I would love to represent a large level charity, but I am not sure if they would be willing to have a volunteer high school ambassador…

I have participated in and won many local level speaking competitions and I also go around to local middle schools and give motivational speeches on hard work, having hope, etc. Speaking is something that I’m really passionate about and I would love to use this skill to benefit society. (I do have college applications in the back of my mind).

However, I am having trouble finding a nonprofit to be an ambassador for… Would cold calling organizations be a good idea? Does anyone have ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

i think I would volunteer for some nonprofits that interest you and then see where that leads.
Or look for local nonprofits that target middle schoolers.
I bet there is some kind of club that talks to middle schoolers about drugs at your HS.

It seems to me you have this backwards, motivational speakers are a bit like snake oil salesman. What exactly do you have to draw from that is inspiring? Otherwise you are just talking about abstracts. It is the DOING that matters, not the talking. You are a freshman at high school, right? If you want to represent, you have to be part of something.

CWRU, what is a freshman HS kid going to talk about exactly? This thing got the eye roll at my kids’ HS. It was a generic fluff exercise.

@Sybylla that is why I am suggesting actually volunteering at a non-profit…then if something organically comes out of it in a year or two then great. Otherwise I agree.

When my daughter was in high school, she got involved with our state chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). She spoke all over the state about what it was like to have an older sibling diagnosed with a serious mental illness. She also spoke at the NAMI Texas annual conference. So I’d say you have to find something you’re passionate about and then go for it. D was the youngest NAMI Maine speaker for a long time.
