Speaking Extra Curriculars

Hi!!

I’m just writing to ask if anyone has any advice or experience when it comes to speaking events for high schoolers. I really love public/motivational speaking and have done well in a couple of local level competitions. I also go around to local middle schools and give motivational speeches on hard work, integrity, etc. However, I was hoping to expand this and I’m not sure how. Does anyone have any competitions/conferences they would recommend for high schoolers (I am a rising sophomore)?

People have suggested debate to me, but I am not a fan of it so I am looking for some other options.

Speaking is something that I am genuinely very passionate about, but I do have college applications in the back of my mind when it comes to speaking as an extracurricular.

Thanks in advance!!

Do debate!! I didn’t think I would like it but I joined my school’s team and ended up loving it. The community is great and you become surrounded by a lot of really smart people with good mindsets. Although, if you’re not a good arguer there are speech events as well which some consist of talking about world issues.

Hi! I’ll definitely look into debate- thanks! Other than that, I know that most ivies look for more than just solid extracurriculars, but rather, an incredible achievement. Therefore, I was wondering what some possibilities of an “incredible” achievement could be in speaking. Would it be speaking at an extremely prestigious conference? Thanks in advance!

Everybody does debate, but actually going to schools to give speeches is more unique, so you might try to expand on this. Another option would be to work with a political campaign or a nonprofit on issues you’re passionate about. I bet they would love a HS student who can talk well.

Thanks! That’s a great suggestion, I will definitely look into that.

Join a local Toastmasters group?

Model UN
Debate

but also see if there are any “anti drug” type mentoring opportunities where High schoolers mentor middle schoolers.

Forensics is a great speaking activity - different than debate.

@hatchette thanks for the idea! I looked into my local toastmasters group. They said they are only for 18 years and older, however I am 15. They suggested starting a gavel club (a club for underage members). Does anyone have experience with that? Speaking is something that I am very passionate about, so I think it would contribute to the persona of a outspoken speaker on college apps. Thanks in advance!

@bobber - Thanks! I will definitely look into that. There are other causes that I am more passionate about, such as anti GMO’s, Obesity, etc. Do you think that would work well, too?

@3kids2dogs - Thanks!! I’ll look into that - I hope it’s not too late to join.
