hilarious ny times op-ed

Apparently private schools are too expensive, even for many of the affluent:

Instead of a new tuition/fundraising/development model, why don't these schools understand that their students can't have/don't need "everything" and reduce some costs?

I didn’t find it funny, much less hilarious. It has been said that we all should have to file FAFSA/PROFILE and pay to our abiltiy up to the need of the school Mini has been harking the subsidization of the cost of college to the wealthy for years. And he has a point.

We all scream that it’s not fair that the needy get aid. What about the wealthy paying a far smaller portion of income/assets when the tuition isn’t even the entire cost of the school. If they paid what they could, or a proportion up to that cost, then the middle/upper middle income families might be charged far less. I find it outrageous that someone making $60K is expected to pay a good 20% of income whereas a wealthy family to whom full cost is no big deal could be paying less than 5%,maybe less than 1% of income.

Sorry but this is a self inflicted wound. The school chooses how to price and discount its services. I have read (and believe) that the top Ivies are underpriced, particularly when you consider some mid or low level privates are in the same cost range It’s up to them how to price their wares.

It is up to the colleges to price their wares, and that is how they are pricing them. Due to avaiability of student loans and the different treatment of student loans over other debt make it possible for them to do this. As far as I am concerned the government should end these subsidies, including pulling the PELLs and Staffords from the private schools and let the market truly determine the prices.

I find it appalling that when it comes to % of income that those in the upper echelons financially are paying a pittance, as compared to the Middle income, and that the low income students are being subsidized by the tax payers.

Oh to have such problems…do we pennypinch and go with the $50,000 experience for first grade or is the $40,000 dollar budget school good enough??? What to do…
