Shooting for Yale, Harvard, Cornell, etc.

I hate the pretentious bastards that boast their scores on this discussion. With all sincerity, I've seen really great scores from other people that topple mine and have been rejected from the schools of their choice. How much will the "Minority" factor come into play during the admissions process?

(Looking to go Pre-Med and major in Biology)

The UW GPA is low, although you might get away w/ it as you have a 4.0 at college. By dual enrollment do you take an equal amount of courses at each? That would reflect an overall GPA of arond 3.8, which is drastically different than a 3.5.

I think Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and Columbia are a little out of your range - even as a URM. Every other school in the country sounds reasonable, and you might get lucky at one or a couple of the first ones I mentioned.

Schools like Cornell, Northwestern, and WashU are all very likely.

Agree with stambliark. HYPSM etc. are out of your league (and almost every one else's, by the way). And the Cuban-American thing probably won't help you at all. Not URM enough. If you really feel the need to try for a top end Ivy, apply to one. You might try U Penn, but even that would be a bit of a stretch. On the other hand, Cornell and Northwestern are about matches, though Wash U is not. Wash U is a very tough school to get into and has a particularly competetive pre-med program. If I were you, I'd take a look at some less selective, but still excellent schools, for example Tufts, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Colgate, NYU, etc. at which the freshman class stats more nearly match yours. And make sure you apply to some safeties.

Thanks for the information. I don't know... I mean, I've seen quite a few of my friends go away to Ivy League schools with slighly higher GPAs. My teacher always used to tell me that URMs are given the advantage when taking the SAT into consideration. She said they compromise GPA for SAT scores. I mean, I've never received a C or anything of that sort. I just slacked a bit during freshmen and sophomore year with all Bs.

Should I include that I used to work after school?

If you want a good school, that you'll have a definate chance to get into, I highly recommend Bowdoin College. One thing that Bowdoin is big on is promoting diversity, you would be a very good match for them. On the note of science and pre-medicine, Bowdoin has very good science departments (ranging from biochem to neuroscience). Another thing which is eye dropping is Bowdoin's 91% acceptance rate to med schools (schools which include: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Cornell, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Case Western, Mayo, UCSF etc).

I don't know...I think that you have a pretty decent shot at the top schools. You've shown dedication/passion with your college courses. Your GPA is really not that bad, especially considering the weighted GPA. Your scores are alright, and you're a URM. Personally, I would say you definitely will be seriously considered, though no one can really predict who will get in to HYP etc... Good luck.
