Hey guys as decisions get closer I just wanted to get your opinions on what my chances may be. I am Puerto Rican and attend a catholic high school and I’m applying to a few ivies. Here’s my background.
4.0 GPA UW (Top 10% of class)(93.56 UW)
Take AP Stat, AP Econ, AP Bio, and AP Calc AB this year with 97 or above in three of them
32 Composite ACT with 33 super score
Head of stock market and robotics club
Involved in student Government
4 year varsity athlete in 2 sports
Would really appreciate your inputs Thanks!
This belongs in what are my chances, and you need a hook. Without one, the Ivies are a crapshoot for all
There is nothing in your profile as given that stands out. How much will you be paying per year?
Your test scores are just within range. I would say your GPA is on the low side for Ivies. I sugest you retake and try for a slightly higher score. Your ECs seem fairly run of the mill, but your varsity sports are good. On the whole, I would say your chances are average to just below average, based on your URM status.
No idea what grade you are in. Work on the GPA, consider retaking the ACT, amp up your ECs. Do something interesting with your stock market club. Just being a URM isn’t enough, IMO.
I won’t give a percentage chance. You know how crazy the odds are. Have a balanced list of reach, match and safety schools. Pay the most attention to the matches and safeties, as that is where youare most likely to end up, statistically speaking. Good luck.
I’m confused how a 4.0 UW GPA is low for the Ivies…I think you are within range. Since you mentioned decisions being soon, I assume you are a second-semester senior (like me), so there is nothing you can do except wait and see. You have a shot, but with Ivies it’s a shot in the dark for practically everyone. Best of luck!
@beepybeetle I think that was the whole point of his question. His hook is URM–being Puerto Rican. While I can’t speak for the OP, I’m guessing he is asking what his chances are considering his URM Hook
@yonceonhismouth I think the other poster is referring to the 93.56 average.
Yes, I was referring to the 93.56.
Well even then his chances are still a bit meh. Grades are good, test scores are average, ECs are weak
You have good test scores/GPA but there’s not really anything unique in your EC’s. Even though you’re an URM, chances of admissions at the Ivies are incredibly competitive for even URM, and I wouldn’t count on admission especially with what I see as a lack of developed EC’s/hook.
That being said, best of luck! You’re definitely a qualified candidate and I hope the process works out well for you.

@beepybeetle by your threads I’m guessing you are also senior in hs like the OP. You probably don’t know more than the op themselves. “EC’s are weak”. You don’t know this person, or who they are. I know they posted this to get opinions but considering you are an applicant as well, why try to tell someone their chances when you are also in the same boat?
@joseylovettt00 Well I’m not sure why you’re so defensive, but based on your post count, I’m going to guess you’re pretty new here. Most of these chance me threads are filled with students chancing other kids (I have even seen sophomore/juniors giving seniors their chances), so I suggest you lurk some more and get a feel for how this forum works. I’m giving him my honest assessment based on what I have read off of this forum, off of my own experience and from my interview experience with the Ivies. In the end, most of the threads offer dubious advice at best and are never to be taken completely seriously. Carry on.
@joseylovettt00 almost everyone chancing is either a high school student or a parent. None of us know what goes on behind closed admissions office doors.
We chance people who want to be chanced because sometimes an objective set of eyes sees your application in a different way than the applicant would. It’s really not a big deal. EC’s can be objectively weak, especially to a student who understands the average course load and EC’s of his or her peers
