i am hispanic, and i was just wondering, as a freshman, is it better to dorm in the "latino" house, since that is probably the only place i will meet other people like myself, or in the regular residences for freshman, since i will get to mingle with freshman like myself. which residence is better? do u really have to share a bathroom with the WHOLE floor. OMG.

^^^well, people like yourself in the sense that they're of hispanic background. There are also people like yourself based on gender, interests, geographic location, etc.

I'm not a minority but it seems that your choice should depend on how tightly spanish culture is intertwined with your life. If you need your cafe con leche and your siesta, latino house probably sounds good. If you're proud of your heritage but want to live with people from all different racial backgrounds, a regular dorm is better. You can still hang out and attend most of the events at the latino house when you want to.

Personally i'm interested in meeting all kinds of people and wouldn't want to live in an exclusively "jewish living community" (not that cornell has one). Of course if i were a very orthodox jew, that might change the story. But for me, living with everyone, and going to some events at the hillel center would suffice. I think it all comes down to you asking yourself how much spanish you want.

Forgive me using hispanic, spanish and latino interchangably if I did...

In terms of the actual facilities, I don't know about the conditions in the latino house versus the regular dorms.

Some dorms you have to share a bathroom with the ppl on your hall, but in others like Ct. and Mews, just with the other 4 people living in your suite. But under no circumstance will you have your own bathroom. I've lived in a dorm w/ communal bathrooms for weeks at a time before, and it really doesn't get that bad. You might have to wait a few minutes at peak times, but the only thing that there were significant waits for was laundry.

hmm.. i dont know if i wanna be all "immersed" in latin life, as you put it. i mean, i do want to get to know new ppl... ok, well thx for the thoughts, gives me something to think about. :)

oh yeah, i don't know what the latino center is, thats just what it seems to be from its name, a spanish community. Like i said above, i'm almost positive you can attend most events there without living there

pyne2apples- where do u go to hs?

ehhh...HS.. do u really wanna know. i mean, its some ghetto ass poor public high school in Yonkers that nobody ever heard of. cornell is probly paying for my tuition cuz they felt bad for me..LOLOL. i mean..the avg. SAT score in my school is like..hmm..700. o man o man. ok, let me stop being so sarcastic. its called Gorton HS. ur not gonna stalk me now r ya. lol. jk.

sternie85... what hs do you go to?

i go to some ghetto hs (ur not alone pyne2aaples) in Bayside, NYC, where the average SAT score (i kid not) is approx 900. most of the kids drop out, and well people here just don't care. it's called Bayside HS (not from saved by the bell--lol)......

900 is a respectivable average for a school! My high school...lets just say we started with 1000+ in 10th grade (it's only 10-12) and by senior year, less than 700, and graduated less than 500!

anyways, I am totally bias, but I H-E-A-R-T LLC (Latino Living Center)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

teehee, i remember going to play laser tag with a group of LLC'ers (put on by the LLC, none of the other dorms did it) and got 2nd out of 15th, first and second place were girls and we beat the boys! woohoo! Then there's the Cafe con Leche (which are really cool), some of the residents had regular events...like my boyfriend had kookies with kuon (that was his name)...etc. It's even better now because you don't have to clean your own bathroom (they used to have to do that) and it's suite style. It's a little weird in that half the residents live on one side, and the other half live on the other side, but in the end, there's a little courtyard (similar to mews, exept its not connected) where they have a lot of their programs.

anywho...i <3 the LLC much more than my own dorm, Donlon. much more social in terms of activities and events, and a much more tight-knit group (but that was last year).

as for not living there but still going to the events, its really hard since they usually only advertise CcL's, and not any of the other events that are only for in-house unless you ask to be "affiliated" (which can be the best of both worlds). they HEAVY subsized the events they attend, and it's sooo much fun. I had a great time with the residents and the activities.

but if you are apprehensive, then just live in a regular dorm, and become affiliated.

o man, thanks for the info. sounds like a great place to be.. just like the rest of cornell. I LOVE THIS FORUM>> u guys r great. :)
