Hispanics at Umich

I had the same thought and therefore the university becomes more appealing to everyone.

Ok....you all are thinking. There is a market for university diversity (in this case racial). UM (and most other U's) demand a certain quantity (ok...not exactly a "specific quantity" b/c that would be illegal) but a critical mass of URMs to create an educationally diverse environment. They demand that "quantity" at a certain academic level (measure of test scores, gpa etc). As academic qualification goes up, universities want more of those URMs. Draw it out on a graph. You suddenly have a quasi-demand curve.

You've already alluded to what the supply curve is in this case, the higher the academic qualifications, the lower the supply (quantity) of URMs available.

The two curves meet at an equilibrium that is BELOW what the university needs to create a diverse environment. They use AA to tinker w/ the supply curve to get the diverse environment they want. It doesn't really have anything to do w/ who deserves what, what's fair and what's not, long histories of slavery and oppression or any of that. Its about the U wanting a diverse environment, and the "market" not providing it w/o intervention.

This is the view of affirmative action that SCOTUS endorsed...that the diverse environment was such a compelling interest to allow what would normally be considered illegal discrimination (the tinkering w/ the supply curve). While the "U" also uses affirmative action for women and for poorer students, eliminating a race-based AA would not allow the University to work to create an ideal educational situation.

Sad reality of the world. Sigh.:)

Affirmative Action is gay, many years from now, people will wonder how retarded the educators/government officials of this generation must have been to allow something fundamentally wrong as Affirmative action to take place for so long.

Thank you for that well learned opinion. rolls eyes

Please...argue without being ignorant.

KB

Being Gay is wrong. Affirmative Action is wrong like being Gay is wrong. How clear do you want it? (rolls eyes<-- I can't believe people still do this thing, how gay is that?)

Okay, who let the idiot get to this forum?

i really don't like the tone of your voice, mister outofstateorbust.....
