Greetings, I am a high school student who will be graduating in 2013. I have been studying in the US for approximately 3 years, and was studying in China the previous years before I arrived here. I currently have a GPA score of 3.8, and I'm also taking two AP courses this year. I have previously taken Honors Biology, and I'm taking honors Chemistry this year. I will also be taking SAT chinese language test to make up for the requirements. My SAT reasoning test scores aren't impressing, but I am really putting an effort into improving it. Thanks All.

If I remembered correctly, HKU Med School requires Cantonese fluency, and they require you to work in Hong Kong after graduation. If you’re not fluent in Cantonese, your application will not be considered.

HKU requires 3 AP scores or SAT2 scores each with a 3/600 or above. SAT2 Chinese is not taken seriously since almost every student in Hong Kong is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. The medical program requires a AP Chemistry score. Other AP exams valued more for medical school are (in my opinion), Biology, Calculus and Physics.

Generally HKU requires 1800 or above for SAT1, however, for the very competitive medical program, there’s no guaranteed admission for any score, but you will have a decent chance if you can score 2200+.

Just remember HKU prefers local students because they will be more likely to practice in HK and it is extremely hard for non-locals to get in anyhow. So I would say your chance is pretty low.

Thank you very much, sendinori, for your reply. I actually am from Hong Kong, and I do speak fluent Cantonese, so I’m not that worried about geographical issues. But, instead of taking AP chemistry, I’m only able to take AP biology and AP literacy, along with Honors chemistry. I don’t really know a second language, but I am fluent in english, cantonese, and some mandarine. I’ll also take the SAT 2 chemistry test in this coming May.

I’m generally more concerned about my SAT reasoning test mainly because currently have a very unsatisfying score, but I was my first attempt and I didn’t really prepare for it, so I believe I still can improve a lot. And I would love to know if my GPA is satisfying enough for them. Thanks.

Just to add more information about myself. I won First place in Los Angeles County Science Fair’s Plant Biology category here in the US, and was, back in Hong Kong, a senior Red Cross member, and was the chairperson of the Aviation Club in my former school. Would these be useful during admission? And how much may these achievements assist me? Thank you

I believe HK schools in general do not value ecs at all unless you excel on a national level. From previous experiences from my school, HKU only cares about your performance on standardized tests and your GPA. Thus, if you can get those up you have a chance.

thanks again Sendinori, for your advices.:S
