HOBY Leadership Program?

Anyone here going to the HOBY Leadership Program in NJ? Or has anyone gone to one of these? I'd love to hear about it so I know what to expect.

I’m not going to the one in NJ, though I did apply along with about 10 other students who were selected for the conference in my state. I think it’s probably between me and this one girl, who will probably end up getting it. The school won’t announce who got it until the end of the year.
Anyway, one of my friends was chosen to go last year. He said it was really fun and a great experience. Another one of my friend’s brother went and said it was fun. It seems like a great program
Congrats on getting accepted, by the way!

Thanks! I’m really excited, but also a little nervous because I really have no idea what it consists of. No one I know has ever done it before.

I think I’m going to the one in NJ, I was chosen as an alternate but my school is still letting me go :)

My son went to our state one - and then World in Chicago later that same summer. Loved them both. Lots of leadership /teamwork activities. Be ready to be engaged and have fun - participate and enjoy. And cheer! :)

@emily213 see you there I guess! Congrats!

@j0shk10 yay! someone from my school went last year and he said that it was a great experience. He told me that the best part was that he met amazing people who he still talks to on a daily basis. He said it was one of the best weekends of his life.

I’m really excited. I just found out today that someone who graduated from my school last year was accepted for HOBY when he was a sophomore. He’s now a freshman at Harvard, so I guess it was good in that way, too!

Wow, that’s impressive! I’m kind of scared because I’m pretty shy when I don’t know a lot of people, but another girl from my school is going too so hopefully it’ll be okay.

I can be a little shy too and I’m going by myself, so I’m very nervous about that aspect of it, but my friend went to something like this (except it was really just based on if you can pay…) and she said it was really great and everyone was really friendly.

Unfortunately I have to pay some of it because I’m the alternate.
I went to a leadership conference when I was in 7th grade (National Young Leaders State Conference) at a hotel right near Princeton that taught me a lot, but I had never been away from home before so it was hard for me… Hopefully this time will be a lot better!! Are you starting to figure out schedules for next year at your school?

Yes! I’m actually freaking out about it because I have no idea how many APs. I have 5 APs that I really want to take, but I’m nervous that it’ll be too much for me, especially since it is junior year.

What does your schedule look like for next year as of now?

Wow, 5 sounds like a lot. Which classes would you take?
I’m freaking out too. My school doesn’t offer that many APs though… This year my “advanced classes” are APUSH 1 and Honors English (and Latin 2 which should be considered an honors class but it’s not), and next year the only “advanced classes” I’m taking are APUSH 2 and AP English (and Latin 3). The only other AP I can take next year is science but all of my teachers told me they “don’t want me to get too stressed out” and that if I do AP Bio and the other 2 APs I “can’t do the musical”. It’s so all stressful haha

For next year right now my schedule is:
7:10 a.m. gym
Band and Chorus
APUSH 2
AP English Language & Composition
Algebra 2
Latin 3
Foods
And some science

I’m thinking about taking AP Physics, APUSH, AP English Lang, AP Macroeconomics which is a half year course, and AP Calculus. I’d also be taking Spanish 4, though. I really want to take the most challenging classes possible. Also, next year is the first year we can take APs, so I want to catch up to everyone else who takes APs all throughout high school.

Planned schedule as of now:
AP Physics B
Gym
APUSH
AP Macroeconomics/Lunch
AP English
Leadership Honors/Art
AP Calc BC
Spanish 4

Leadership Honors is required for peer leaders and art is for the visual arts requirement my school has.

Yeah my school doesn’t offer half of those courses because we’re a pretty small high school. But I have no idea what I want to major in or anything so it’s hard to know what classes will benefit me in the future.

Yea, that’s true. My high school is really small too (I have a little over 100 in my grade) but my school has also gone a little AP crazy. They’ve actually gotten rid of honors courses (US Honors for Juniors, Physics Honors, etc.) to force people to take AP.

My class has about 200. But we never have both Honors and AP for a subject. Actually other than 2 math classes once you’re a junior it’s pretty much either you take a normal class or you take AP- nothing in between.
