Hockaday vs Loomis Chaffee

I got into Hockaday and Loomis and I wasn’t sure which one I should go to. I’m looking for academic rigor and good college matriculation and it feels like Hockaday is better at both of those but I’m unsure if it truly is. Does anyone have any information regarding those statistics or just which is the better school in general?

Hockaday is an excellent school (I had several friends attend as day students, and one as a boarder.) However, it is essentially a day school. I believe there are less than 75 boarders spread over 4 yrs. In terms of school cutlture, you need to,understand that it will not be a typical boarding experience. Additionally, many of the boarders go home on weekends as they are from small Texas towns. My one friend who boarded went home almost every weekend. Now as a parent, I have seen tough situations for my friends’ kids who have gone to schools ( boarding populations that are less than 70%. (I believe Hockaday is around 20%.) Both girls transferred after their first year as the dorms were empty and there was little to do on the weekends. Revisit, try to stay overnight, and ask Hockadaisies how, they have felt about being boarders.

Hockaday is not a boarding school. Except in the most literal of senses, as there are a few boarders. But check out the number of boarders vs. the number of students. Plus it’s a pre-K through 12th grade. That’s less than ideal for many folks when they think about boarding schools. Check out how much of the school gets FA. Otoh, LC is very much a traditional boarding school. What percentage of the kids at LC board? How many kids get FA? How diverse is the student body? If you want and/or are looking for the traditional American boarding school experience, then the choice would be clear to me, but you’re not me. I’m not sure how you are measuring academic rigor, and the Hockaday college matriculation is fine, but so is LC’s. But Hockaday is not a boarding school. Keep in mind also that since Hockaday is not a boarding school, you would be going to school with the daughters of some of the wealthiest families in the great Dallas, Texas area. Whether that is a dream or a nightmare is entirely up to you.

I don’t know anyone who has gone to LC and not been happy with the experience. It sounds like you should attend the revisit days.

There are day schools that have boarders and boarding schools that have day students. Very different environments for boarders at both. (And there are boarding shool where everyone leaves on weekends, another challenging situation. )

Greater. Greater Dallas TX environs. Typos, man.

Congrats on your acceptances. My daughter is a current Junior at LC. I can assure you that the academics are top notch and incredibly rigorous as well. It is a phenomenal school with an incredible community. Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.

Hockaday is very much a day school. I would not want to board there. Not much to do other than shop and no place really nearby to walk to coffee, etc.
